Cheer And STUNT Teams Ranked Nationally
April 11, 2013 | General
Bowling Green, Ohio – The BGSU cheerleaders are ranked second in the nation after competing in the College Cheer National Championships in January, and their STUNT team is ranked third nationally earning them a bid to compete in the STUNT National Championships in Daytona, Fla. April 13 against number two seeded Oklahoma State. University of Louisville is the number one seeded team.
STUNT is an NCAA emerging sport derived from the athletic components of cheerleading for female athletes. USA Cheer created STUNT as an opportunity for colleges, universities and high schools to meet the strict Title IX requirements of a college sport, while still preserving traditional cheerleading.
STUNT removes the crowd-leading element of cheer and focuses on the technical and athletic components of cheer, including partner stunts, pyramids, basket tosses, group jumps and tumbling.
The BGSU STUNT team, finishing second in DI West with one loss to Louisville, is comprised of 30 cheer members. During their first season, the team finished undefeated and was ranked fifth nationally with two members being named First Team All-American.
Quotes:
Head Coach, Anne Marie King-
“The team set a goal last July to earn a bid to the STUNT National Championships. We fell just short of the National Championship in 2012, so the team was eager and determined to push themselves to the next level. The team has been working hard in the gym since August to meet this goal, along with cheering for football, basketball, and competing at College Cheer Nationals. All their hard work in the gym has paid off and we are proud of their work ethic and determination. In our final week of practice, our team is ready and excited to represent BG on a national level once again this weekend.”
Senior, Delayna Herndon from Brownstown, Mich.
"We are very excited about qualifying for STUNT Nationals, it is another great opportunity to recruit for our program as well as for Bowling Green as a whole. It's quite the accomplishment to be contending for a national title in only our second year with STUNT. Needless to say we are very proud! It just goes to show what talent, hard work and dedication can accomplish. We're excited to go down to Daytona this weekend and represent the University the best we can!"
