July 26, 2013 | Men's Soccer
D'Agostino, Silva & Wiest will lead BGSU this season
Bowling Green State University men's soccer coach Eric Nichols has announced his team's captains for the upcoming season. Joey D'Agostino, Brandon Silva and Michael Wiest will serve as tri-captains of the 2013 Falcons.
The captains were chosen by a vote of team members.
"Although Brandon, Joey and Mike are very different in their leadership styles, they share an enthusiasm to serve their teammates," said Nichols. "This is a special attribute that is at the core of our team's culture, and one that will prove particularly effective with our players who are extremely driven to succeed and eager to be led to greatness."
Silva is a team captain for the third consecutive year, while D'Agostino has been named a captain for the second-straight season.
D'Agostino, a fifth-year senior, is a three-year letterwinner, and has played in 54 matches over his first four years in BG. A native of Livonia, Mich. (Stevenson H.S.), he has recorded five career points on a pair of goals and an assist. His goals came in a pair of road wins during the 2010 season, against IPFW and Florida Atlantic. The latter win gave the Falcons a berth in the MAC Tournament. Last year, D'Agostino played in just two games, seeing action in the first two contests of the fall before missing the rest of the 2012 campaign due to injury.
Silva, like D'Agostino a fifth-year senior, is a native of Columbus (Worthington Kilbourne H.S.). He has played in 55 of BGSU's 56 matches over his first three seasons in Northwest Ohio, missing one game due to injury. After scoring one point in 2010, he has scored 10 points over the last two years. In 2012, Silva had a goal and an assist for three points. He was named BGSU's Junior Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the 2012-13 academic year, and has earned Academic All-Mid-American Conference honors in each of the last two seasons.
Wiest, who hails from Naperville, Ill. (North H.S.), has played in 34 career matches, starting 33. After playing in just one match as a freshman, he made 13 starts in goal in the 2011 season, and played every second of every match between the posts last year. Wiest ranked eighth in the nation in saves in 2012, with an even 100 stops, and had a goals-against average of 1.10, a saves percentage of .813 and seven complete-match shutouts. In MAC play, his GAA was just 0.83, and his saves pct. was .854. His overall saves total was the highest by a BGSU goalkeeper since 2003, and his seven shutouts were the most of any Falcon 'keeper since the '01 season. Wiest was named to the MAC's All-Tournament Team in 2012.
After a home scrimmage vs. Cincinnati on August 24, Nichols and the Falcons will open the 2013 season with a pair of Labor Day weekend contests at Cochrane Field, taking on Malone on August 30 and Michigan on Sept. 2. The 2013 schedule also includes home games against Ohio State (Sept. 13), Detroit (Oct. 8), Northern Illinois (Oct. 12), Cleveland State (Oct. 16), Hartwick (Oct. 26) and IPFW (Nov. 5). All BGSU men's soccer home matches are scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
