Gates, Penrod Named Pizza Hut Athletes Of The Week
September 02, 2013 | Football, General, Volleyball
Each week, the Bowling Green State University Athletic Department names the Pizza Hut Athletes of the Week, as selected by the athletic communications department based on their athletic performances from the previous week. This week's winners are football player BooBoo Gates and volleyball player Paige Penrod.

Male Athlete of the Week
BooBoo Gates, a senior from Middletown, Ohio, led a smothering defensive effort for the Falcons, tying for a team high with seven tackles and adding both a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. With BGSU clinging to a 3-0 lead midway through the second quarter, Tulsa was driving deep into BGSU territory. But on a seven-yard completion, Gates forced a fumble at the 11 yard line and Bowling Green recovered to keep Tulsa out of the end zone. Then, with BGSU holding a 20-0 lead in the fourth, Tulsa muffed a punt and Gates recovered it at the Golden Hurricane eight-yard line. Two plays later, the Falcons scored a touchdown that salted the game away. Gates added one tackle for loss.
Female Athlete of the Week
Paige Penrod, a senior from Circleville, Ohio, was dominant in the Hampton Inn Invitational, earning a spot on the all-tournament team after posting 50 kills and guiding the Falcons to their first win over a ranked opponent in program history. Penrod opened the tournament with 13 kills against Marquette and then followed that up with 21 kills and a .459 attack percentage against No. 25 Creighton. In the final match of the tournament, she led the Falcons with 16 kills as Bowling Green defeated No. 13 BYU in five sets, winning the final three after dropping the first two.
