With the victory, the host Panthers, ranked No. 24 in the nation in this week's Soccer America poll, improve to 2-0-1 on the young season. The Falcons drop to 1-2-1 on the year.
"We came to Milwaukee to play two nationally-ranked teams this weekend," said BGSU head coach Eric Nichols. "We knew that playing these two very good teams would give us a good opportunity to test ourselves and see where we stand. We got our answer. We are not there yet, and we've got a lot of work ahead of us.
"I'm confident, though, that we will learn our lessons from this trip, and we will build from it."
Milwaukee scored what would prove to be the winning goal on a counterattack in the 34th minute of play. A long ball was played ahead to Younes on the left side of the pitch. He headed downfield, then cut back across the penalty area and sailed a shot past BGSU senior Michael Wiest.
BG had several chances in the opening half, with senior Anthony Grant putting a pair of shots on target. With nearly 21 minutes gone, Grant ripped a shot that UWM 'keeper Liam Anderson, roughly 10 yards off of his end line, was able to block. The ball sailed high into the air, but Anderson turned and made an over-the-shoulder catch of the shot to prevent a rebound.
Six minutes later, the Falcons were able to string together a few passes, with Grant again involved. A BG pass was deflected by a UWM defender, but the ball went directly to Grant as he entered the penalty area. The senior fired a shot, but Anderson was equal to the task, making a diving save to keep the match scoreless at that point. Younes gave the hosts the lead seven minutes later.
The Panthers maintained that 1-0 lead until the 60th minute, when Bell fed Robbie Boyd on a pass into the penalty area. Boyd was brought down in the box, and a penalty kick was awarded. Bell converted that PK for what would prove to be the final goal of the match.
Bell also had made a PK in last year's BGSU-UWM meeting, at Cochrane Field. That match was won by the Falcons, 2-1, on a Danny Baraldi PK in overtime.
Arguably BG's best chance of the second half had come in the early going, when senior Matt Griesinger played a right-side cross into the box. The inswinger found the head of senior Ryan Snashall, but Snashall's shot was stopped by Anderson.
Wiest had five saves on the afternoon, including four in the second half. The senior made a diving stop of a Beau Laufer effort in the 63rd minute, and tipped another hard shot by Laufer over the bar 20 minutes later.
The Falcons' final scoring chance came with under three minutes remaining, when Grant got the ball and headed down the center of the pitch with a UWM defender on his heels. Grant got tangled up with that defender, Isaias Juarez, as they neared the 18-yard box, and the ball rolled to Anderson.
Anderson had three saves in the match for the Panthers.
A pair of Falcon seniors, Brandon Silva and Zach Schewee, were named to the Panther Invitational All-Tournament Team.
The Falcons have faced three nationally-ranked opponents in a row, and the schedule gets no easier for the Brown and Orange. BGSU returns home to prepare for a Friday (Sept. 13) match vs. Ohio State. Kickoff for that contest is set for 7:00 p.m., and admission is free.
Following the OSU match, the Falcons will hit the road for five consecutive games, beginning with trips to Michigan State (Sept. 18) and Akron (Sept. 21).
