Raleigh, N.C. – The Bowling Green State University men's golf team wrapped up 36 holes of play on Monday with a combined two-round team score of 603, +35, to finish day one of the Wolfpack Intercollegiate hosted by N.C. State University at the par 71, 7,307-yards Lonnie Poole Golf Course at N.C. State in Raleigh, N.C.
BGSU carded a first round team score of 309, +25, before dropping 15 strokes off their second round team score of 294, +10, to finish day one of play in 15th-place overall with a combined 36-hole team score of 603, +35. The Falcons are just 10 strokes out of the top-10 on the team leaderboard.
The Falcons were one of only two teams, along with East Carolina, that didn't have a player shoot a least one round in the 80s on the day, as all five Falcons carded rounds under 80 for both the first and second rounds of play.
"This is the hardest we have fought back this fall and we did it in very tough and windy conditions, and on a very tough course. This will give us some confidence heading into the rest of the season after playing very hard courses over the last few tournaments," stated head coach Kevin Farrell. "(On all five players shooting two rounds in the 70s on the day) That is what teams strive for. To have five guys shooting in the 70s so that all five guys are right there to help the team scores."
BGSU sophomores Brett Rinker and Jose Narro each had a strong second round, as the two posted identical scores of 72, +1, on the afternoon session. Rinker posted a first round of 77, +5, and when added to his second round 72, +1, he concluded day one in a tie for 37th-place overall with a 36-hole score of 149, +7. Narro turned in rounds of 78, +7, and 72, +1, to end day one in a tie for 42nd-place with his two-round combined score of 150, +8.
Rinker and Narro both led the Falcons with 25 pars on the day, while Rinker edged Narro with three birdies to his fellow classmate's two.
Both freshman Cameron Michalak and Ryan Triller also improved from the first to second rounds of play on Monday. Michalak shot a first round 77, +6, and a second round 75, +4, to finish day one with a 36-hole combined score of 152, +10, and in a tie for 57th-place overall. Triller posted a 78, +7, and a second round 75, +4, to wrap up day one in a tie for 63rd overall with a two-round combined score of 153, +11.
Rounding out the BGSU lineup was senior Joe Cooper. Cooper carded rounds of 77, +6, and 78, +7, to finish day one with a combined score of 155, +13, and in a tie for 73rd-place. Cooper registered a team-best four birdies on the day, two in each of his first two rounds of play.
N.C. State leads the 18-team field with a team score of 566, -2 under par, over the first two rounds of play, while East Tennessee State (569, +1) and East Carolina (575, +7) round out the top-three on the team leaderboard.
UNC-Greensboro (577, +9) and Seton Hall (582, +14) sit in fourth and fifth-place, respectively.
The third and final round of play is set for an 8:00 a.m. double-tee start tomorrow morning.
