Bowling Green, Ohio – Bowling Green State University sophomore golfer Jose Narro has recently been selected to represent his home country of Mexico in the newly created Latin America Amateur Championship on January 15-18, 2015, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The winner will receive an invitation into the 2015 Masters Tournament in April.
In January 2014, the Masters Tournament, The R&A and the United States Golf Association (USGA) announced the formation of the Latin America Amateur Championship (LAAC), a new amateur golf competition aimed at stimulating growth and inspiring even greater interest in the game throughout South America, Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean.
The Tampico, Mexico native is one of only four collegiate players to be chosen to represent the national team of Mexico at the LAAC event, joining Alvaro Ortiz of the University of Arkansas, Patrick Sanchez of Marquette University and Roberto Ruiz of the University of Texas-El Paso.
"It is a great honor for me to be able to represent my country in such a big event as the Latin America Amateur Championship. Being called to the national team was something that was so far away at the beginning of the summer, but it has been a really good six months of golf for me that now it is a reality," stated Narro. "I feel very proud of myself for what I have accomplished, but there are also so many more people involved in this success. Coach (Farrell) did a great job with the schedule that we played this fall that allowed us to play better teams and better players, and in that way we all took bigger steps up in the rankings."
The inaugural competition will take place January 15-18, 2015, at Pilar Golf Club, a course opened in 1992 near Buenos Aires that has hosted the Argentina Open twice (2006, 2011), as well as other national championships. The LAAC will consist of 72 holes of stroke play with a cut to the leading 60 players plus ties after 36 holes.
"I am thrilled for Jose on being selected to play in this event," commented BGSU head men's golf coach Kevin Farrell. "He has worked tirelessly at improving his game and I am so excited for him to see that his dedication and hard work all year long is paying off. This is not only a great golf opportunity for him, but an unbelievable life experience for Jose as well."
The countries and territories represented in this first edition are: Argentina, Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda, Bolivia, Brazil, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, St. Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos Islands, Uruguay and Venezuela.
"I am very excited for this opportunity I've been given and I will do my best," Narro said.
