Late last month (Oct. 30), Flynn, a native of Naperville, Ill. (Central H.S.), earned Academic All-District First-Team honors, making him eligible for consideration to the Academic All-America® Team.
An accounting major at BGSU, Flynn has a cumulative grade-point average of 3.812.
Flynn started all 21 contests for head coach Eric Nichols in 2014, and led the team with 14 goals and 32 points. Those totals are the highest by a Falcon since BGSU Hall-of-Famer Steve Klein exploded for 18 goals and 50 points in the 1996 season.
Flynn's goal total was tied for the third-highest in a season in program history, and his point total tied him for fifth on that BGSU list.
In just his second game as a Falcon, Flynn scored five goals and 11 points -- all in the first half -- of an 8-0 win over Findlay, tying the school single-game records that had stood for nearly 33 years. That was the first of three multiple-goal games for Flynn this season.
Flynn led the Mid-American Conference in total goals and game-winning goals (six), and he ranked second in the conference in total points, goals per game (0.67) and points per game (1.52). He ranks among the national leaders in all five of those categories, as he is eighth or better on each list. Flynn is third in the country in total goals and GWG, fifth in total points, seventh in points per game and eighth in goals per game.
Flynn was directly involved in the scoring of nine game-winning goals. In addition to the six GWG he scored himself, three of his four assists on the season came on the winning tally. His last assist of the year came on Max Auden's overtime goal in the MAC Tournament semifinal-round match against West Virginia, sending the Falcons to the league tourney final for the first time in 11 years. Flynn also had a goal in that win over WVU.
Flynn scored a 'Golden Goal' of his own in the Falcons' 1-0 win at Detroit, and had two-goal games vs. both Niagara and Eastern Illinois. Flynn also scored goals vs. IUPUI, Northern Kentucky and Michigan. He had an assist vs. Niagara, for a five-point game, and also had a helper on Joe Sullivan's winning goal at St. Bonaventure.
Previous men's soccer Academic All-America® Team selections by CoSIDA include Greg Murphy (1991), Joe Burch (1995 - Third Team and 1996 - First Team), Ty Fowler (1999 - First Team), Jacob Lawrence (2009 - First Team) and Silva (2013 - Second Team). Murphy, Burch and Fowler earned GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-America® Fall/Winter At-Large Team honors, as men's soccer did not have its own separate team selected at that time.
The Capital One Academic All-District Teams were the result of voting by CoSIDA members within their respective districts. BGSU is in District 5, which consists of schools in the states of Ohio, Michigan, Illinois and Indiana. To qualify for nomination to the district team, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials and a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.30 (on a 4.0 scale). Additionally, he must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing (true freshmen, red-shirt freshmen and ineligible athletic transfers are not eligible) and must have completed at least one full academic year at the institution.
The first-team all-district selections then were added to the ballot for Academic All-America® honors, and the national team was determined by a vote of members of the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Committee as well as the CoSIDA Board of Directors.
Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 19,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
Flynn and the Falcons finished the season with an overall record of 14-6-1 and a MAC record of 2-2-1. The overall win total is the program's highest in 17 years, and the trip to the league tournament final, as mentioned, was BG's first in 11 seasons.
