Falcons Picked Fourth In Softball Preseason MAC Poll

Cleveland, Ohio -- The Bowling Green State University softball team, led by eighth year head coach Shannon Salsburg, was tabbed to take fourth in the Mid-American Conference East Division in the Softball Preseason Coaches' Poll, according to the league offices that announced the poll Tuesday afternoon.
Kent State was tabbed to be the favorite in the MAC East Division in 2014, receiving seven first-place votes. Ohio and Miami each received two first place votes and was picked second and third in the East, respectively. After Bowling Green, Akron was selected fifth and, despite receiving a first-place vote, Buffalo was selected to finish last.
In the West Division, defending MAC champions Central Michigan was tabbed to finish first with six votes from the coaches, followed by Ball State in a close second. Northern Illinois, Western Michigan, Eastern Michigan and Toledo followed to round out the west.
The Orange and Brown return nine letterwinners from a team that finished 9-13 in the MAC, and 27-24 overall. The Falcons will bring in nine freshmen and one transfer to complete a 19-player roster that will compete for Bowling Green in 2014. The Falcons are led by their three captains, junior Emily McClelland and seniors Katie Yoho and Erika Stratton.
The Falcons begin the 2014 season at the Viking Indoor Tournament held at Cleveland State University. The Orange and Brown will throw out their opening pitch as the home team versus the Vikings at 11 a.m. Bowling Green holds a commanding 19-6 all-time record against the Vikings. The Falcons' second game on Saturday will be against Robert Morris at 5 p.m., where Bowling Green is 2-1 all-time versus the Colonials.
The Orange and Brown will close out the tournament with another doubleheader on Sunday (Feb. 9). The Falcons will take on Bucknell at 9 a.m., marking the second ever meeting between the two programs. Bowling Green will then close out the tournament with a 1 p.m. game against Canisius College, marking the first ever meeting between the two teams.
The Falcons will compete in five pre-conference tournaments at the beginning of the year, and are scheduled to play in 24 road games before taking on Western Michigan University in a doubleheader (March 28) on their home field. The Orange and Brown will play 18 games in three consecutive weekends before taking on North Florida in a doubleheader in Jacksonville, Fla., on Tuesday, March 11.Â
