Falcons Set To Play In 11th Annual UMBC Spring Classic

BALTIMORE, Md. -- The Bowling Green State University softball team will participate in its fifth and final tournament of the 2014 campaign this weekend, as the Falcons will head to Baltimore, Md. for the 11th Annual UMBC Spring Classic. The Falcons (6-13-1) will take on three teams in four games from March 21-23. The Orange and Brown will open their weekend at the UMBC Softball Stadium in a single game on Friday against Sacred Heart at 10:15 a.m. Bowling Green will then take the diamond twice on Saturday against Mount St. Mary's and host UMBC at 11:15 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., respectively. The Falcons conclude the tournament will a second date against the Mount on Sunday morning, opening pitch is scheduled to start at 10:15 a.m. The Falcons will take on all three opponents for the first time in program's history.

UCF Spring Fling (March 7-9)
Day One: ORLANDO, Fla. – The Bowling Green State University dropped a pair of hard-fought games in the opening day at the UCF Spring Fling. Playing at the UCF Softball Complex, the Falcons (4-10-1) dropped their opening game to Colgate University by a score of 1-0. The Orange and Brown lost to Troy in the second game of their doubleheader, 3-0.
The Falcons got strong pitching performances from sophomore Braiden Dillow and junior Jamie Kertes throughout the day. The two allowed a total of four earned runs on 12 hits, while striking out 10 batters and surrendered only three walks on the day.
Day Two: ORLANDO, Fla. – Bowling Green scored a season-high nine runs, including a four-run sixth inning, as the BGSU softball team defeated the University of Pennsylvania by a score of 9-3 in the second game of their doubleheader on Saturday night (March 8). Earlier in the day, the Falcons (5-11-1) lost to Western Carolina 1-0. Â
After starting the UCF Spring Fling at the UCF Softball Complex totaling zero runs on six hits, the Falcons exploded at the plate against the Quakers, totaling 10 hits for nine runs to begin to round into form. The Falcons earned their first victory of the Spring Fling after dropping three games decided by a total of five runs.
Day Three: ORLANDO, Fla. – The Bowling Green State University softball team lost to the University of Central Florida on Sunday afternoon (March 9), 2-0, on the final day at the UCF Spring Fling. The Falcons (5-12-1) were led by a strong pitching performance by junior Jamie Kertes on the day in the losing effort.
Kertes (3-8) got the call to start in the circle at the UCF Softball Complex, allowing two earned runs and six hits in 4.2 innings of work against the Knights. The Carnegie, Pa., native struck out four batters and had only one walk as she was credited with a tough loss. Offensively, the Orange and Brown's lone hit came from senior co-captain Katie Yoho, going 1-for-2 on the day.
North Florida Doubleheader - Game Recap (March 11)
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. –  The Bowling Green State University softball team rebounded in the second game of their doubleheader, defeating the University of North Florida by a score of 2-1 at the UNF Softball Complex. Playing for the first time outside of a tournament format in program's history, the Falcons (6-13-1) fell to the Ospreys, 4-0, in the first game of the day.
Behind strong pitching and holding off a late seventh inning rally, the Falcons' two runs on six hits proved to be enough in game two. The Orange and Brown got a resilient pitching performance from sophomore Braiden Dillow and a hard-nose defensive effort late in the game to hold off the Ospreys.
IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ACTION
The Falcons have seen strong pitching performances from junior Jamie Kertes and sophomore Braiden Dillow in the circle. Kertes, who will enter the week with a 2.58 ERA in 20 appearances, posted a 0.78 ERA in 18.0 innings of work last week in Florida. Meanwhile, Dillow posted a 1.56 ERA in seven appearances in Florida, and now has a season ERA of 2.91 for a 3-4 record.
THE STREAK IS ALIVE
Senior captain Katie Yoho has been hot at the plate in recent weeks for the Orange and Brown. Yoho will enter the weekend on a six-game hitting streak, batting for an average of .350 (7-for-17), three RBI and one double to lead BGSU during the stretch. Overall, the Grove City, Ohio native has accumulated a batting average of .328 (20-for-61), three doubles, one triple, two homers and nine RBI.
RAKER'S IMPACT
Freshman Chelsea Raker has also made her presence felt when she steps up to the plate. Raker leads all freshman with a .310 batting average (.18-for-58) and has totaled a team-leading six runs scored. The Westerville, Ohio native is second on the team in batting average, total hits, and total bases. Raker also has accumulated three doubles, three home runs and eight RBI while starting all 20 games this season.

PRESEASON POLL
BGSU was picked to finish fourth in the MAC Preseason Poll, as voted on by the league's coaches. The Falcons finished fourth in the East Division during the regular season a year ago. Kent State was tabbed to be the favorite in the MAC East Division in 2014, receiving seven first-place votes. Ohio and Miami each received two first place votes and was picked second and third in the East, respectively. After Bowling Green, Akron was selected fifth and, despite receiving a first-place vote; Buffalo was selected to finish last.
