WPGA Release
Pittsburgh, Pa. – Bowling Green State University rising sophomore golfer Brett Rinker, who hails from Slippery Rock, Pa., was named the recipient of the 2013-14 Frank Fuhrer, III Award by the Western Pennsylvania Golf Association (WPGA). The award is given annually to the area's (Western Pennsylvania) most outstanding collegiate golfer.
The award is named after Frank Fuhrer, III, whose collegiate career at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, included All-ACC and All-American honors and membership on the 1981 Walker Cup team.
"This is a huge and well deserved honor for Brett to cap off his strong year of play," commented BGSU head coach Kevin Farrell. "This award is yet another testament to all his hard work and dedication to continue to get better in all areas of his game each and every day."
In his first year at BGSU, Rinker averaged a team best 73.3 strokes for 31 competitive rounds with five top-10 individual finishes. He recorded four rounds in the 60's, and finished the season with a ninth-place showing in Penn State's Rutherford Intercollegiate and a fifth-place finish in the 2014 Mid-American Conference Championship.
Rinker was named the MAC Men's Golf Freshman of the Year and also earned both Second-Team All-MAC honors and All-Tournament Team recognition.
Also under consideration was last year's recipient, Joshua Stauffer, Bradford, a sophomore at St. Bonaventure, Olean, NY, and Garret Browning, Coraopolis, who will be a sophomore at Robert Morris University.
Previous winners include Justin Smith, 2001-02, who led Minnesota to the NCAA Division I Championship, Robert Rohanna, an All-Big Ten selection while at Penn State, Mike VanSickle, who won twelve tournaments at Marquette, and Rachel Rohanna, an All-Big Ten selection at Ohio State.
