Bowling Green, Ohio – Both current Bowling Green State University men's golfer Jose Narro and former golfer Drew Preston took part in the U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying events on Monday, June 2nd, with the goal of qualifying to compete in the 2014 U.S. Open Championship at the Pinehurst Resort and Country Club at the Village of Pinehurst, North Carolina on June 9-15th.
Narro, who just completed his freshman season at BGSU in May of 2014, played his sectional qualifying event at the Lakeside Country Club Golf Course in Houston, Texas.
Playing for one of the top-three spots out of the 56 player field in order to qualify for the U.S. Open this year, Narro carded a first round 75, +3, and a second round 80, +8, to finish the event with a 36-hole score of 155, +8, and in a tie for 51st-place overall.
Preston withdrew from the event after only three holes of play during the first round at the U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying event at the Emerald Valley Golf Course in Creswell, Oregon.
"It was a great experience for both Jose and Drew to compete at the U.S. Open Sectionals, as it gave them a chance to play with both elite amateur golfers and professional golfers at a very competitive event," commented BGSU Men's Golf Coach Kevin Farrell. "It will be a good experience for Jose to build on as he continues his career at BGSU and a stepping stone for Drew as he looks to continue his professional career."
Both Narro and Preston played with some pretty elite players, as Narro was in a group with both Scott Fernandez and Kelly Kraft, while Preston played alongside Derek Gillespie.
Fernandez, an amateur like Narro, just finished tied for 82nd at the 2014 NCAA Championships after placing in a tie for sixth-place overall at the NCAA Columbia Regional, the best finish by an Iowa State golfer in NCAA Regional history, while Kraft, who turned professional after competing in the 2012 Masters Tournament, recorded two wins as an amateur and has played in the Masters Tournament, the U.S. Open and the British Open in years past.
Gillespie, a Canadian professional golfer who has played on the Canadian Tour and is currently on the Web.com Tour, has posted two Canadian Tour wins and more recently was the winner of "The Big Break Prince Edward Island", a golf reality television show on the Golf Channel in the summer of 2009.
