Veteran trio leads BGSU into the 2014 preseason
Seniors Danny Baraldi and Jon Kumher and junior Jake Genrich will serve as tri-captains of the Bowling Green State University men's soccer team in the coming season. The trio and their teammates officially begin preseason preparations for the 2014 campaign later this week..
The captains were chosen by a vote of team members.
Baraldi, a senior, has played in 54 matches over his first three years in BG, and has posted double-digit point totals in each of those three seasons. A native of Canton, Ohio (Massillon Jackson H.S.), he has recorded 47 career points on 14 goals and 19 assists. Baraldi earned All-MAC Second-Team honors last year, when he finished third on the Falcons with 10 points. He had a five-point game vs. IPFW, the highest single-game point total by a Mid-American Conference player in the 2013 season. Baraldi earned All-MAC First-Team accolades in 2012, when he scored a career-high 19 points, and he had 18 points in his freshman season.
Genrich, a junior, has played in all 39 of BGSU's matches in his first two seasons, starting 38. A native of Plymouth, Mich. (Salem H.S.), and a central defender, he has helped the Falcon defense post 15 shutouts in that two-year span. That total included seven in 2012, and eight -- the highest total in 15 years -- in 2013. The Falcons allowed just 0.89 goals per game last season. Genrich played every minute of the match on 13 occasions last season, including in each of the Falcons' last eight games, and was named to the Academic All-MAC and Academic All-Ohio Teams.
Kumher, a senior, has played in a total of 33 matches in his first three seasons. Primarily a defender, the Lancaster, Pa., native (Conestoga Valley H.S.) scored the first points of his career late last season in the Falcons' win over IPFW. He assisted on a BG second-half goal before scoring his first collegiate goal moments later. Kumher made 10 starts as a sophomore in the 2012 season, and has started a total of 15 career matches heading into 2014.
After a series of organizational meetings on Wednesday evening (Aug. 13), the men's soccer team's first practice will take place Thursday morning (Aug. 14). Head coach Eric Nichols and the Falcons will head to West Virginia for a scrimmage against Marshall University next Wednesday (Aug. 20), and the regular season begins on Friday, Aug. 29, when IUPUI comes to Cochrane Field. Kickoff for the season opener vs. the Jaguars is set for 6:00 p.m.
The 2014 home schedule also includes games against Findlay (Sept. 2), Northern Kentucky (Sept. 12), Eastern Illinois (Sept. 19), Michigan State (Sept. 24), Akron (Oct. 11), Buffalo (Oct. 18), Western Michigan (Nov. 1) and Wright State (Nov. 4). All BGSU men's soccer home matches are scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. with the exception of the IUPUI (6:00 p.m.) and WMU (3:00 p.m.) contests.
