Johnson Named To Manning Award Watch List
August 14, 2014 | Football
The Manning Award, sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl, published its complete preseason Watch List on Thursday. The list includes 32 of the top quarterbacks in the nation heading into the 2014 season. The winner will again be selected by a voting panel, which includes national media and each of the Mannings, after the bowls.
Â
Bowling Green State University redshirt junior quarterback Matt Johnson was one of 32 quarterbacks in the country to be named to the Watch List.
Â
Johnson started the final 13 games for Bowling Green last season, leading them to their first Mid-American Conference Championship since 1992. In that MAC Championship Game, Johnson threw for a career-high 393 yards and a MAC Championship Game record five touchdowns. Johnson passed for 3,467 yards and 25 touchdowns in 2013.
Â
The signal caller finished the 2013 season inside the top 10 in school history for single-season passing yards (4th – 3,467), touchdown passes (6th – 25), yards per completion (4th – 14.6), completions (9th – 237), and completion percentage (t5th – 64.2). He was named MAC Player of the Week three times.
Â
The Manning Award was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl in honor of the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning. It is the only quarterback award that includes the candidates' bowl performances in its balloting.
Â
"This is always a great time of year with college football ramping up once again," said Archie Manning. "We have a very strong group of 32 quarterbacks on our Watch List this year and we've seen them all in action, but every year there are new guys who jump right in and become stars. That's what makes college football such a wonderful sport – you never know what might happen once the teams get out on the field."
