Men's soccer sophomore picks up yet another award
Bowling Green State University men's soccer sophomore Pat Flynn has earned yet another award this week. On Wednesday (Sept. 24), Flynn was named the Mid-American Conference's Scholar-Athlete of the Week, the league office announced. He earns that honor for the first time in his BGSU career.
Wednesday marks the third consecutive day that Flynn has received an award or honor of some sort. The forward was named the MAC Player of the Week on Monday, and also was selected to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week. On Tuesday, the Naperville, Ill., native was named the College Sports Madness MAC P-O-W by that website.
Flynn, the nation's leading scorer, continued his tremendous start to the season, scoring three goals – including both game-winners – in a pair of Falcon victories last week. Flynn scored the lone goal of the match as the Falcons knocked off Michigan, 1-0, in Ann Arbor Tuesday night (Sept. 16). Then, on Friday evening (Sept. 19), Flynn scored two goals, including a header with just over 11 minutes left that broke a 1-1 tie against Eastern Illinois. He added an insurance goal in the late stages of the match to give the Brown and Orange a 3-1 win.
On the year, Flynn now has 12 goals and 26 points. No BG player had scored 12 goals in a season since the 1996 season, and no Falcon had totaled 26 points since '99. Flynn now has five game-winning goals on the year.
The sophomore has scored a goal in six of this season's seven matches, and has scored two or more goals on three occasions.
In the classroom, Flynn has a cumulative grade-point average of 3.812 as an accounting major.
The MAC Scholar-Athlete-of-the-Week award is presented to one male and one female student-athlete each week. To be eligible, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 or higher, and must have performed well during the previous week's competition. The winners are selected by the conference's faculty athletics representatives.
Flynn and the Falcons are 6-1-0 this season, and are off to the program's best start since 1995. BGSU hosts nationally-ranked Michigan State University tonight (Wednesday, Sept. 24) at Cochrane Field. The match begins at 7:00 p.m., and admission is free.
