Buenos Aires, Argentina – Bowling Green State University men's golfer Jose Narro finished round one of play in a tie for fifth-place overall with a score of 69, -3 under par, on day one of the inaugural Latin America Amateur Championship held at the Pilar Golf Club in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The winner will receive an invitation into the 2015 Masters Tournament in April.
The inaugural competition is taking place from January 15-18 at the Pilar Golf Club, a course opened in 1992 near Buenos Aires that has hosted the Argentina Open twice (2006, 2011), as well as other national championships, and consist of 72 holes of stroke play with a cut to the leading 60 players plus ties after 36 holes.
"I started my round bad with a three-putt on the second hole, but an eagle on the third and a birdie on the fourth holed to get me back together," commented Narro. "I stayed very positive throughout the round."
Representing his country of Mexico, Narro's round of 69, -3 under par, included an eagle on the par-4 hole number 12, as well as a birdie on number one and number 13. He also posted 14 pars on a round in which he recorded a 35, -1 under par, on the front nine and a score of 34, -2 under par, on the back nine.
Narro is in a seven-way tie for fifth with a first round 69, -3 under par, and is only one stroke off the lead which sits at 68, -4 under par.
In January 2014, the Masters Tournament, The R&A and the United States Golf Association (USGA) announced the formation of the Latin America Amateur Championship (LAAC), a new amateur golf competition aimed at stimulating growth and inspiring even greater interest in the game throughout South America, Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean.
The countries and territories represented in this first edition are: Argentina, Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda, Bolivia, Brazil, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, St. Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos Islands, Uruguay and Venezuela.
The tournament will continue with round two of play tomorrow, Jan. 16. The top-60 golfers at conclusion of tomorrow's round of play will make the cut and continue on in the event.
