Spezia, Searle Named Pizza Hut Athletes Of The Week
March 16, 2015 | General, Ice Hockey, Softball
Each week, the Bowling Green State University Athletic Department names the Pizza Hut Athletes of the Week, as selected by the athletic communications department based on their athletic performances from the previous week. This week's winners are hockey player Tyler Spezia and softball player Aspen Searle.

Male Athlete of the Week
Tyler Spezia, a freshman from Clinton Township, Mich., scored the overtime game-winner in Friday's 3-2 win over Northern Michigan in game one of the WCHA Tournament and then added the game-tying score the next night as BGSU hockey swept the Wildcats to move to the WCHA Final Five. Spezia's heroics on Friday came with less than 30 seconds remaining in the first overtime. After BGSU battled back from 1-0 and 2-1 deficits to force the extra session, Spezia picked up a loose puck and slammed it home for the 3-2 win. The next night, Northern Michigan took another 1-0 lead in the second period but Spezia carried the puck into the offensive zone and sniped a shot past the NMU goalie to tie the score. BGSU went on to win 4-1 to earn the two-game sweep in the best-of-three series.
Female Athlete of the Week
Aspen Searle, a sophomore from Brantford, Ontario, hit .579 and slugged 1.000 in six games over the past week. She had at least one hit in each contest and four multi-hit games. She led off each of the past five games by reaching base and went 5-for-7 in the team's two games against Indiana. She was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles in the first contest and 2-for-3 in the second. Sunday, she went a combined 4-for-7 in a pair of wins. In a 12-4 victory over IPFW, Searle was 2-for-3 with two home runs, a walk and four RBI. She followed that up by going 2-for-4 with two runs scored in a 5-3 win over Wright State.
