BGSU Leads MAC In NCAA Public Recognition For APR Success
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio—The Bowling Green State University Athletics Department posted some of its best Academic Progress Rate [APR] scores in history, as released by the NCAA today. Eight teams posted their best APR scores since the rating system began for the 2004-05 season.
Â
All of the Falcons' 18 sports have multi-year APR rates of 933 or above and seven posted a perfect 1000 single-year rate in the latest report for the 2013-14 year. All 18 of BGSU's teams were comfortably above the NCAA's minimum score to receive scholarship limitations or postseason bans. The men's cross country, women's basketball, women's golf, women's tennis, and volleyball programs at Bowling Green have the highest APR scores in the Mid-American Conference for their respective sports.
Â
"As our record-setting academic year comes to a close, it's important to recognize those student-athletes that have graduated from BGSU at an exceptionally high rate," Assistant Athletics Director for Academics & Student Services Chet Hesson said. "These APR scores are an indication of our department's ability to retain high-quality student-athletes who have achieved the highest GPA in school history and graduated."
Â
BGSU had seven teams post a perfect single-year rate. The men's basketball, men's cross country, men's golf, women's golf, gymnastics, tennis and volleyball programs all posted a 1,000 for the 2013-14 year. For volleyball, it marks the fourth consecutive perfect single-year rate and for men's cross country, it is the fifth consecutive perfect score. Women's golf has earned six consecutive perfect single-year scores and tennis has hit that mark 10 straight years.
Â
From a multi-year perspective, all 18 teams scored a 933 or better. The tennis program continues to have a perfect 1000, the same score it has received every year of the APR, and women's golf, men's cross country, and volleyball also scored a 1000. Hockey (990), women's basketball (991), gymnastics (995) and swimming (990) were all at 990 or better, while softball (988), baseball (988), and women's soccer (987) also posted strong scores.
Â
In all, 11 of BGSU's 18 sports posted scores equal to or better than a year ago. The largest increases came from men's cross country [improved from 986 to 1,000], gymnastics [improved from 990 to 995], volleyball [Improved from 995 to 1,000], and women's basketball [improved from 987 to 991]. Six programs have improved multiple years in a row, led by baseball with improvements in each of the last six years. Both men's cross country and hockey have improved in each of the last four years, while men's basketball and gymnastics have improved three years in a row. Women's basketball also improved for the second straight year, going from a 987 last year to a program-record 991 this year.
Â
Eight programs recorded their best scores in the history of the APR. Baseball (988), men's basketball (960), men's cross country (1,000), hockey (990), women's basketball (991), women's golf (1,000), tennis (1,000), and volleyball (1,000) all posted their highest scores in the 10-year history of the APR. Four Falcon teams posted perfect multi-year scores, announced last week by the NCAA. For the tennis program, they have earned a perfect 1,000 score in all 10 seasons, while women's golf earned the perfect recognition for the sixth time (including the third straight year). For volleyball, the perfect 1,000 score was the third time in 10 years, while men's cross country earned public recognition for the first time in program history.
Â
APR scores are based on retention and eligibility of each scholarship student-athlete. Each student-athlete can earn four points per year – one point for first-semester eligibility, one point for first-semester retention, one point for second-semester eligibility, and one point for second-semester retention. The total points earned are then divided by total points possible and the decimal place is dropped for the APR score.
The APR is a real-time measure of eligibility, retention and graduation of student-athletes competing on every NCAA Division I athletics team. The most recent scores are based on a multi-year rate that averages scores from the 2010-11, 2011-12, 2012-13 and 2013-14 academic years. The goal of academic reform is improvement, not punishment. Not only does academic reform ensure accountability for student-athletes, teams and institutions, but it also provides fairness by considering individual circumstances per team and school.
