Late Goal Lifts UC Past Falcons, 2-1
August 22, 2015 | Men's Soccer
Naperville natives combine for BGSU's lone goal
Bowling Green State University men's soccer junior Pat Flynn scored midway through the second half, but the host University of Cincinnati scored late in each half to post a 2-1 win over the Falcons Saturday night (Aug. 22). The scrimmage was held at Gettler Stadium on the UC campus.
"The guys have put in some solid work in preseason, but we still had a lot of questions, so it was great to play game minutes," said BGSU head coach Eric Nichols.

Flynn scored off of an assist from fellow junior and fellow Naperville, Illinois native Joe Sullivan in the 66th minute, tying the score at a goal apiece. The Bearcats' John Manga had opened the scoring with just 1:57 left in the first half.
Flynn, BGSU's leading scorer a year ago, was named to the Hermann Trophy Watch List several weeks ago. He had 14 goals and 32 points in 2014. Manga was UC's top scorer last season, with 10 goals and 22 points.
UC's Adam Wilson found the back of the net with just under five minutes left in the second period, providing the final margin. Alejandro Garcia had assisted on the hosts' first goal of the night, playing a through ball to Manga who scored from the right side.
Flynn's goal came when Sullivan played a ball through the box to his fellow junior, and Flynn finished just inside the post. Wilson's unassisted winner came when he bent a free kick into the upper half of the goal from just outside the 18-yard box.

The Falcons held a 13-6 advantage in total shot attempts, and BG more than doubled UC's shots-on-goal total as well. The Brown and Orange put seven shots on frame to the Bearcats' three. The Falcons had a whopping 9-0 margin in corner kicks on the night.
Redshirt juniors Ryan Heuton and Nick Landsberger played 45 minutes apiece in goal for the Falcons. Alex Gill went all the way in goal for UC, making five saves. The hosts were credited with one 'team save' as well.
"There were a number of positives to take away, particularly in the second half," said Nichols. "We had some really solid spells of possession and created a lot of chances. We will need to build on that, and tighten up other areas before our first match on Friday."
The Falcons now return to Northwest Ohio to prepare for that Friday (Aug. 28) match. BGSU will face SIUE at Cochrane Stadium in the regular-season opener. That match, which begins at 7:00 p.m., is the first of a season-long four-game homestand. Admission to all BGSU soccer home matches is free.
