Johnson, Cadel Named Vito's Athletes Of The Week
September 14, 2015 | Football, General, Women's Soccer
Each week, the Bowling Green State University Athletic Department names the Vito's Athletes of the Week, as selected by the athletic communications department based on their athletic performances from the previous week. This week's winners are football player Matt Johnson and women's soccer player Lauren Cadel.
Male Athlete of the Week
Matt Johnson, a redshirt senior from Harrisburg, Pa., threw for a career-high 491 yards Saturday as BGSU Football defeated Maryland on the road, 48-27. He added six passing touchdowns to tie the school record. Johnson now leads the country with 915 passing yards and ranks second with eight touchdown passes. His 491 yards were the second-most in school history and the victory marked the Falcons' second straight season with a win over a Big Ten opponent. It was BGSU's first road win over a power five program since 2008.
Female Athlete of the Week
Lauren Cadel, a redshirt junior from Newmarket, Ontario, set a school record with a career-high 19 saves in Bowling Green's double-overtime draw with Valparaiso Sunday afternoon. Her 19 saves broke Erika Flanders' mark of 17 set in 2001 for BGSU. Cadel recorded six saves in the opening half and then added 13 more in the second half to surpass her previous career-best of 14 saves. She also tallied nine saves in wins over Findlay and Eastern Illinois as BGSU went 2-0-1 in three games this week.
