Coppet, Walny Named Vito's Athletes Of The Week
October 03, 2016 | Football, General, Women's Cross Country
Each week, the Bowling Green State University Athletic Department names the Vito's Athletes of the Week, as selected by the athletic communications department based on their athletic performances from the previous week. This week's winners are football player Fred Coppet and cross country runner Rachel Walny.
Male Athlete of the Week
Fred Coppet, a senior from Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., had 25 carries for a career-best 141 yards and two touchdowns in BGSU Football's game against Eastern Michigan Saturday. Coppet moved into ninth place in career rushing yards at BGSU and scored both of the Falcons' fourth quarter touchdowns as the team tried to rally. He had 95 yards rushing in the second half and added a four-yard reception for 145 all-purpose yards.
Female Athlete of the Week
Rachel Walny, a redshirt sophomore from Clinton Township, Mich., followed up her victory on Sept. 16 at the Mel Brodt Collegiate Invitational by breaking a 31-year-old school record and placing 11th overall in the Gold Division race at the 2016 Louisville Cross Country Classic. Walny's time of 17:10.7 broke the 31-year-old BGSU 5,000-meter standard of 17:12. She was the MAC's top finisher in the event, which is one of the largest and most prestigious cross country meets in the country. This year's Gold Division race featured 12 regionally ranked teams and a nationally-ranked Michigan squad. Walny's effort helped BGSU finish 17th overall, in the top half of the field's 36 teams.
