Trent Greene Named Nominee For Burlsworth Trophy
November 01, 2016 | Football
Fayetteville, Ark. – Bowling Green State University redshirt senior Trent Greene has been named a nominee for the Burlsworth Trophy, given annually to the most outstanding football player in America who began his career as a walk-on. Greene leads the Falcons in tackles from his position as an outside linebacker.
Greene has 74 tackles this year with a sack and 1.5 tackles for loss. He recorded his first career interception against Eastern Michigan and has two passes defended and a quarterback hurry this year. Greene has started all 22 games over the past two seasons and was second team All-MAC last year after posting 127 tackles and 8.5 for loss.
Among the 52 nominees for the award are five MAC players – Greene, Eastern Michigan's Blake Banham, Kent State's Nick Cuthbert, Toledo's Jack Linch and Western Michigan's Trevor Sweeney.
In the award's seventh year, the Burlsworth Trophy is named in honor of Brandon Burlsworth, former Arkansas walk-on and All-American offensive lineman. His life is the subject of a major motion picture, "Greater", which was released earlier this year. Each nominee must have begun his first season of participation with an FBS football program without financial aid of any kind from his university's athletic department. The 2015 winner was Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield.
