Mwembia, Garda Named Vito's Athletes Of The Week
November 07, 2016 | General, Men's Soccer, Volleyball
Each week, the Bowling Green State University Athletic Department names the Vito's Athletes of the Week, as selected by the athletic communications department based on their athletic performances from the previous week. This week's winners are men's soccer player Anthony Mwembia and volleyball player Madeline Garda.
Male Athlete of the Week
Anthony Mwembia, a freshman from Toulouse, France, made four saves to earn a shutout in the Falcons' lone match of the week. Mwembia and the BGSU defense held Buffalo off of the scoreboard for 110 minutes in a 0-0 tie at Cochrane Stadium on Saturday night. With the result, the Falcons – picked to finish fifth in the six-team Mid-American Conference in the preseason coaches' poll – finished second in the final regular-season standings.
Female Athlete of the Week
Madeline Garda, a senior from West Chester, Ohio, had yet another fantastic defensive weekend, as the Falcons went 1-1 with a win at Kent State (Nov. 4) and a five-set loss at Ohio (Nov. 5). For the weekend, Garda racked up 64 digs, and averaged 7.11 digs per set. In a 3-1 win at Kent State, she picked up 26 digs (6.50 digs/set). In an epic five-set match at Ohio, she registered 38 digs (7.60 digs/set). The 38 digs tied the program record for most digs in a five-set match, and were just two digs shy of the program record for most digs in a single match – a record that she established earlier in the season.
