Callaway, Raker Named Vito's Athletes Of The Week
March 07, 2016 | Baseball, General, Softball
Each week, the Bowling Green State University Athletic Department names the Vito's Athletes of the Week, as selected by the athletic communications department based on their athletic performances from the previous week. This week's winners are baseball player Cody Callaway and softball player Chelsea Raker.
Male Athlete of the Week
Cody Callaway, a sophomore from Elyria, Ohio, hit .500 (5-for-10) with five RBI and two runs, as Bowling Green went 3-0 at the Elon Tournament across March 4-6. Callaway registered at least one hit and one RBI in all three games. On Friday, the sophomore went 1-for-2 and drove in a run in the ninth with a single in BGSU's 6-2 win. On Saturday, Callaway had a career day, as he went 3-for-4 with three RBI, while also scoring a run. In the fifth inning, Callaway registered an RBI single to bump BGSU's lead up to 4-1. In the seventh, with Bowling Green leading by a score of 4-2, Callaway notched a two-run double to help secure a 6-2 win. On Sunday, Callaway sparked a four-run second inning. He doubled in the tying run, and later scored. Callaway is now hitting .412 on the season with a .588 slugging percentage.
Female Athlete of the Week
Chelsea Raker, a redshirt sophomore from Westerville, Ohio, hit an incredible .750 on the weekend, with 9 hits in 12 at-bats as the Falcons went a perfect 3-0. She had four extra-base hits, an on-base percentage of .769 and a slugging pct. of 1.333 on the weekend. On Saturday, Raker reached base in all five plate appearances in an 11-2 win over Morgan State. She was a perfect 4-for-4 with a walk. Raker just missed hitting for the cycle in that game, falling a single shy. She had two doubles, a triple and a homer in that win, for a slugging pct. of 2.750 on the day. She scored a run and drove in two. On Sunday, she was a combined 5-for-8 in BG's two wins, going 3-for-4 against a strong Towson team before going 2-for-4 vs. MSU. Raker singled in her first at-bat vs. TU, then hit a fly ball to right field that was caught. Believe it or not, that fly-ball out ended a streak of 11-straight plate appearances in which she had reached base, dating to Feb. 26. Raker then proceeded to get four hits in her next five at-bats.
