Charleston, S.C. – Battling windy conditions all day, BGSU's Jose Narro, Brett Rinker and Pablo Heredia Iglesias continued their play on Saturday, April 2, at the third round of the 68th Azalea Invitational held at the par-71, 6,776-yards Country Club of Charleston golf course in Charleston, South Carolina.
The fourth and final round of play of the 72-hole event will take place on Sunday, April 3.
Narro turned in a round of 74, +3, on Saturday over his third round of play at the Azalea Invitational to put him in a tie for 13th-place overall heading into the final round of play on Sunday. Narro, who carded rounds of 69 and 68 over his first two rounds of play on Thursday and Friday, has a 54-hole score of 211, -2 under par, thus far. After a tough front nine in which he recorded two birdies, two pars, three bogeys and two double bogeys, the junior stormed back to tally two more birdies and seven pars for a 33, -2 under par, on the back nine.
The Tampico, Mexico native is 10 strokes off the lead heading into the final round on Sunday.
"I struggled today. It was very windy and the course was very wet as well," stated Narro. "I managed to come back a little bit on the back nine, but it still wasn't a good round. I'm just going to take it one shot at a time and stay focused tomorrow."
After shooting a second round 67, -4 under par, on Friday, Rinker carded a third round 75, +4, on Saturday. With rounds of 73, 67 and 75 over the last three days of play, the junior is in a tie for 34th overall with his 54-hole score of 215, +2. Rinker was up-and-down on the front nine on Saturday with one birdie, four pars and four bogeys. On the back nine, Rinker recorded eight straight pars before bogeying hole No. 18.
"I hit the ball well, but struggled with the speed on the greens and did not make very many putts," Rinker said. "The wind blew all day with strong gusts, which made play tough as well. Tomorrow I am just going to try and hit the ball well again and keep giving myself opportunities. They are bound to go in at some point."
Shooting a third straight round of 72, +1, on Saturday was Heredia Iglesias who will enter the final day of play on Sunday in a tie for 40th-place overall with a 54-hole score of 216, +3. The Falcon freshman has been consistent all week long with a round of 72, +1, on each day of play. On Saturday, he carded four birdies and 10 pars, but was hampered by three bogies and a double bogey on number 12.
"I'm a little disappointed. I was putting better today, but I don't know why things this week can't go in the right direction," commented Heredia Iglesias. "I started strong, which is how I needed to, with a couple of early birdies. After a few bogeys I bounced back with birdies on holes nine and 11. It was windy all day and that made it hard to measure the distances on the back nine."
Rinker is scheduled to tee-off tomorrow at 8:40 a.m., while Heredia Iglesias will tee-off 20 minutes later at 9:00 a.m. Narro is slated to tee-off at 9:10 a.m. for the final day of play.
