Senior trio to lead BGSU in the fall of 2016
A trio of seniors will serve as tri-captains of the Bowling Green State University men's soccer team in the coming season. Head coach Eric Nichols has announced that fifth-year senior Max Auden and fourth-year Falcons Jacob Roth and Joe Sullivan will lead the 2016 edition of the Falcons.
Auden has been named a BGSU captain for the second-straight season. The captains are selected by a vote of team members.
"Max, Jake and Joe all have taken their leadership to another level," said Nichols. "Not only do the three of them lead by example, but they also do a great job of holding the rest of the team accountable as well as driving the competitive component. We are in good hands with these three as our captains."
Auden started all 19 matches last fall, and played 1693 of a possible 1756 minutes in 2015. He had six points on a goal and four assists, tying for fourth on the team in assists and ranking fifth in points. His goal came on the road against an eventual NCAA Tournament team, as he scored late in the first half at Ohio State. Auden was named to the Veterans Memorial Cup All-Tournament Team as the Falcons were co-champions at that tourney in mid-September. In his career, Auden has played in a total of 56 matches as a Falcon, starting all but two. He has 22 points on seven goals and eight assists, and three of those seven goals have proven to be game winners.
Roth, like Auden, started every match last year, and played 1753 of a possible 1756 minutes. He was second on the team in minutes played, and finished third on the Falcons in scoring, with 14 points. Roth was third on the team with five goals, and he also had four assists on the season. Roth led the team in scoring in MAC matches last fall. In his Falcon career, he has played in 46 matches, making 41 starts. Roth has started all 40 of BGSU's matches over the last two seasons, and he will enter the fall of 2016 with a career total of 32 points on 10 goals and 12 assists. Roth, like Auden, has three career game-winning goals.
Sullivan was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team for the second-straight year in 2015, and went on to be named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Second Team. On the pitch, Sullivan started all 19 matches and was second on the team in scoring. He had 17 points on six goals and five assists, tying for the BG lead in assists and ranking second on the Falcons in both goals and points. Sullivan recorded a pair of four-point games, with a goal and two assists vs. Western Illinois and a pair of goals vs. IPFW. He scored the game-winning goal in each of those contests, and led the Brown and Orange with three GWG last season. Sullivan has career totals of 39 points on 13 goals and 13 assists, and seven of his 13 goals have been winners.
BGSU finished the 2015 season with an overall record of 9-9-1, and the Falcons have won a total of 23 matches over the last two years. BG will begin the 2016 campaign with three-straight matches at Cochrane Stadium. The full 2016 schedule will be announced early next week.
