Men's Soccer Wraps Up Successful Spring Season
May 13, 2016 | Men's Soccer
The Bowling Green State University men's soccer team recently concluded another successful spring season. Head coach Eric Nichols and the Falcons posted a 4-1-1 record during the spring, downing an NCAA Tournament team on the road and averaging over two goals per match.
"We had a very successful spring," said Nichols, who will enter his eighth season at the BGSU helm this fall. "We had some big holes to fill. Ryan James, obviously, was selected in the MLS Draft and is now playing professionally. Jake Genrich was huge for us in the back over the last four years, and Jake Martin in the middle in the last two seasons.
"Additionally, we had different guys in goal, and a few other players missed some time in the spring with injuries. But, we go into those games looking to win. It sounds blatantly obvious, but the best way to learn how to win is to actually win. That's the best way to know if our game plan is working, and that's the best way to find out who is prepared to take on certain roles."
The Falcons began the spring season with a 2-2 draw against Michigan in late February, and the Brown and Orange then scored a combined seven goals in wins over Tiffin and Oakland on back-to-back weekends. BG scored three second-half goals en route to a 4-2 win over the Dragons at Cochrane Stadium, and the Falcons then went back on the road and picked up a 3-2 victory over the Golden Grizzlies, an NCAA Tournament team last fall.
After a home loss to Detroit, the Falcons ended the spring campaign with a pair of shutout wins, downing Notre Dame College and winning the annual Alumni Match as well.
"We are pleased with the overall effort and performance this spring," said Nichols. "Other than the Detroit match, it was a very positive few months, and a number of guys stood out.
"Jake Roth really took his game to another level. His leadership has continued to develop. He's always had the tools, but he's become even more of a complete player. The other captains, Joe (Sullivan) and Max (Auden), have taken that leadership to another level as well. All three of those guys lead not only by example, but they also hold everyone accountable and really drive the competitive component."
In addition to the captains, Nichols mentioned several players who made their respective BGSU debuts in the fall of 2015 and have taken their game to another level.
"Tate (Robertson) and Bismark (Agyeman) are a pair of young guys who each had a great spring, and they showed that they're going to be impact players for us in the fall," said the head coach. "Alexis Souahy continues to develop his leadership as a field general at the center-back spot. He's got a good voice, good leadership and a quality skill set. And those three are not alone; I could mention many more guys that have shown improvement and have developed their games this spring."
Rising senior Pat Flynn missed the final four matches in the fall due to injury, but still led the Falcons in scoring with nine goals and 22 points last season. Nichols said he and Sullivan (six goals, 17 points in 2015) picked up right where they left off once Flynn returned to the pitch in the spring.
"Pat and Joe already had a great understanding of each other, and a sense of where the other one was on the field, before they both came to BG," said Nichols. "And, it just keeps growing and becomes more and more effective every year. Both players are very capable of scoring, and they are both unselfish players. They don't care who scores the goal, and others on the team benefit from their synergy as well. I think we'll see them both have great senior seasons, and I think we will also see guys like Tate, Peter (Pugliese) and others benefit from playing with those guys in the attack. And, we have a very good group of freshmen coming in, so we feel very good about our attacking unit.
"In the back, we are a little younger and a little less experienced, but we were able to give a lot of guys some valuable playing time in the spring. All in all, it was a very positive spring season, and we look forward to getting everyone back on campus in the fall."
BGSU finished the 2015 season with an overall record of 9-9-1, and the Falcons have won a total of 23 matches over the last two years. BG will begin the 2016 campaign with three-straight matches at Cochrane Stadium. The full 2016 schedule will be announced early next week.
