Bowling Green, Ohio – Bowling Green State University men's golf head coach Kevin Farrell unveiled the Falcons' 2016-17 schedule today, as the Falcons will once again take on another challenging slate this year spanning over five different states.
"As we have done over the last few years, we wanted to play a tough schedule to prepare us for the MAC Championship," stated Coach Farrell. "Again we will compete in some familiar events such as the Marshall Invitational, the ODU/OBX Intercollegiate, the Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic and the Lone Star Invitational. Our team will also return to the Mountaineer Intercollegiate and the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate this season, while also competing in two new tournaments for us in the Inverness Intercollegiate and the Border Olympics."
BGSU will tee-off its 2016 fall slate for the fifth straight year at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational hosted by Marshall University on Sept. 12-13 at the Guyan Golf & Country Club in Huntington, West Virginia. Overall this will be the seventh straight season in which the Falcons will compete at the Marshall Invitational, as the Falcons took second-place overall with a 54-hole score of 835, -17, in last year's event.
The Falcons will then return to the state of Ohio and head north up I-75 to take part in the Inverness Intercollegiate hosted by the University of Toledo in Toledo, Ohio on Sept. 19-20 at the historic Inverness Club.
BGSU will then return to the second-annual Mountaineer Intercollegiate hosted by West Virginia at the Pete Dye Golf Club in Bridgeport, West Virginia on Oct. 10-11. The Falcons took eighth-place overall out of the 14-team field in the inaugural event last fall.
Bowling Green will wrap up the month of October at the ODU/OBX Intercollegiate hosted by Old Dominion University at the Kilmarlic Golf Club in the Outer Banks, North Carolina on Oct. 23-25. The Falcons, who finished in 10th-place overall out of the 18-team field at the event back in the fall of 2013, recorded a runner-up team finish with a 54-hole team score of 854, +2, last year in 2015.
For the third straight season, the Falcons' will fly to Hawai'i to conclude the fall season at the Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic in Lahaina, Maui, Hawai'i on Nov. 4-6. Hosted by the University of Hawai'i at the Ka'anapali Golf Club Resort, the Falcons finished in sixth-place overall out of the 13-team field at the 2014 event and took 16th-place last season in the 19-team field which included six top-40 nationally ranked teams.
"Our spring season will be a little different this season compared to our last few years, as we will not be hosting the Greenbrier Collegiate Invitational," continued Coach Farrell. "The annual spring tournament that we co-hosted with Marshall has been cancelled due to the devastating flooding that was caused by record rainfalls throughout West Virginia earlier this summer. Greenbrier County and The Greenbrier were hit hard by the torrential rains and left the course with extensive damage from the flood waters."
The Orange and Brown will kick-off the 2017 spring slate at the Border Olympics hosted by the University of Houston on Mar. 10-11 at the Laredo Country Club in Laredo, Texas, before returning to the Lone Star State just 10-days later to compete in the Lone Star Invitational in San Antonio, Texas. Held at the Briggs Ranch Golf Club and hosted by the University of Texas – San Antonio on Mar. 20-21, the Falcons will tee it up for the third straight year at the Texas event, as BGSU took ninth in 2015 and finished 11th overall last year in 2016.
With the absence of the Greenbrier Collegiate Invitational, the Falcons will have month off before returning to the links for competition on Apr. 22-23 at the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate hosted by Ohio State University at the Ohio State University Golf Club in Columbus, Ohio. Last year, the Falcons battled rain, sleet, high winds and extreme cold to finish in 12th-place overall on the weather-shortened event.
The Falcons will wrap up its regular season slate at the 2017 MAC Men's Golf Championship on Apr. 28-30. This year's conference championship will be hosted by Eastern Michigan University at the Virtues Golf Club in Nashport, Ohio.
