Bowling Green, Ohio – The Associated Press ranked the top 100 football programs in history and Bowling Green State University tied for No. 99 all-time.
Â
The AP has been ranking the best teams in college football since 1936 and the organization named its top 100 by giving one point for every poll appearance to mark consistency, two points for every time a team was ranked No. 1 and 10 points for an AP championship.
Â
Bowling Green football has a storied tradition that includes 12 Mid-American Conference Championships (as well as two of the last three) and the 1959 small college national championship. The Falcons have a 533-364-52 record in 96 seasons, a winning percentage of .589.
Â
In 2003, ESPN's College Gameday came to Bowling Green for the first and only visit to a MAC school by the nation's most watched pre-game college football show. On that day, the No. 23 Falcons beat undefeated No. 12 Northern Illinois.
Â
BGSU has defeated three Big Ten programs in the past two seasons, beating Indiana at home in 2014 and both Purdue and Maryland on the road in 2015. Throughout its history, the Falcons have a winning record against Power Five programs such as Kansas (1-0), Maryland (1-0), Missouri (3-2), Northwestern (2-0), Purdue (3-0) and Syracuse (2-0). Bowling Green went undefeated in 1928, 1930, 1948, 1956 and 1959.
Â
Twenty-five Falcons have been named All-Americans and two of the six winningest coaches in NCAA Division I history, by winning percentage, have coached at Bowling Green in Doyt Perry (fifth at .855) and Urban Meyer (sixth at .851). BGSU has played in 13 bowl games, including each of the past four seasons. The Falcons currently boast a 17-game winning streak against MAC East Division foes, a stretch that dates back to the 2012 season.
Â
Bowling Green is celebrating the 50th anniversary of Doyt L. Perry Stadium in 2016. The Falcons opened the stadium with a 13-0 win over Dayton on Oct. 1, 1966 and will celebrate for Homecoming as the team hosts Eastern Michigan on Oct. 1, 2016.
