Each week, the Bowling Green State University Athletic Department names the Jet's Pizza Athletes of the Week, as selected by the athletic communications department based on their athletic performances from the previous week. This week's winners are basketball players Dylan Frye and Haley Puk.
Male Athlete of the Week
Dylan Frye, a sophomore from Miami, Fla., had a huge week, as BGSU men's basketball went 1-1, and picked up a home win over Florida Gulf Coast. For the week, Frye averaged 19.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists, while going 7-for-15 (46.6 percent) from downtown. In BGSU's home opener versus South Dakota, Frye registered 23 points, and added seven rebounds. Frye, who went 5-for-10 from three-point land, which set a career high for made three-pointers, fell one point shy of tying his career high in scoring. His seven rebounds tied his career high. In the Falcons' win over FGCU, Frye nailed the game-winning triple with 0.9 seconds left to give Bowling Green an 83-80 win. In the game, Frye had 15 points, six rebounds and two assists. He went 2-for-5 from deep, and 7-for-8 at the charity stripe.
Female Athlete of the Week
Haley Puk, a senior from Waterloo, Iowa, averaged a team-high 13.0 points, along with 3.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists, as the Falcons went 2-1 last week. Puk and the Falcons picked up road wins over Detroit Mercy and Robert Morris before seeing a 3-0 start to the season come to an end with a loss to Canisius. Puk had eight points and three assists at UDM, then exploded for a career-high 26 points in the Falcons' win at Robert Morris. She had set a new career best by halftime, with 17 first-half points in that win. Puk went 6-of-11 from the field and hit a pair of three-pointers, but she did much of her damage at the free-throw line. She was 12-for-14 from the stripe, topping the totals for the entire RMU team in both free throws made and attempted. In that win, Puk had 11 of her points in the first quarter alone, going 5-for-5 at the free-throw line over a 37-second span, then hitting two triples just over a minute apart.
