SIUE Added to BGSU's 2017 Schedule

Cougars joining MAC for the upcoming campaign
The Bowling Green State University men's soccer team has added a match with Southern Illinois University Edwardsville to the 2017 schedule. SIUE, initially added as a Mid-American Conference affiliate member for the 2018 season, now will join the MAC for the '17 campaign.
Earlier this month, the MACÂ announced SIUEÂ as an affiliate member in men's soccer and wrestling originally anticipated for the 2018-19 academic season. However, the opportunity arose to include SIUE within the MAC's 2017 men's soccer schedule immediately.
BGSU will travel to face SIUE on Saturday, Oct. 7, marking the Cougars' first-ever MAC contest. To accommodate the addition of SIUE to the league and the 2017 schedule, the Falcons' non-conference match at Belmont, originally scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 3, was cancelled.
Last year, the Cougars won the Missouri Valley Conference tournament championship before advancing to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA College Cup. SIUE topped No. 13 Michigan State and No. 11 Butler in the national tourney, before falling to eventual runner-up Wake Forest.
With the addition of SIUE, the MAC men's soccer membership now consists of six programs – four from full MAC membership (BGSU, Akron, Northern Illinois and Western Michigan) and two affiliate members (SIUE and West Virginia).
Additionally, the Falcons' home match vs. Western Illinois University on Saturday, September 9, has been moved to a 12:00 p.m. start. That date is part of Family Weekend on the BGSU campus, and the Falcon football team's home opener is that evening at 6:00 p.m.
Head coach Eric Nichols and his staff return 13 letterwinners, including seven starters, from the 2016 team. The Falcons had an overall record of 9-6-4 in '16, and BGSU finished MAC regular-season play with a 2-0-3 league ledger. BG finished second in the conference, the program's best showing since the 2002 season, and the Falcons were undefeated at Cochrane Stadium for the first time since 1996.
