BGSU Athletics Partners With Step Up-Step In For Sexual Assault Awareness
April 18, 2018 | General
Bowling Green, Ohio - Bowling Green State University Athletics has taken the initiative set forth by the It's On Us campaign to change the way people view sexual assault. Many of Bowling Green's student-athletes have become involved with the effort to prevent sexual assault through the Step Up – Step In movement.
Â
Launched in Sept. of 2014, It's On Us is a cultural movement aimed at fundamentally shifting the way people view sexual assault. Over time, it has formed into an invitation for everyone to step up and realize the solution begins with us. Each institution involved has formed their own brand of It's On Us, including BGSU. The foundation of the Bowling Green organization operates on the following values: To recognize that non-consensual sex is sexual assault; To identify situations in which sexual assault may occur; To intervene in situations where consent has not or cannot be given; To create an environment in which sexual assault is unacceptable and survivors are supported.
Â
Student-athletes at Bowling Green have become heavily involved in spreading the message of It's On Us, particularly through the Step Up – Step In initiative. This specific initiative emphasizes the need to engage in conversation to develop knowledge and awareness of how we can prevent relationship violence, sexual assault, stalking, and sexual harassment.
Â
Having the student-athletes' voices involved with the movement has helped it gain traction throughout campus. From athletes to administrators, those in athletics have joined the forefront of the movement with enthusiasm to be part of the solution. The message has been passed along through various mediums, including a video featuring student-athletes spreading the word about the movement. This video has been played at home athletic events, including football, hockey, men's basketball, women's basketball, and volleyball.
Â
Informational installations have also been placed in both the Slater Family Ice Arena and the Stroh Center to help raise awareness for the movement beyond the campus and into the community.
Â
With the help of student-athletes and students alike, It's On Us and Step Up – Step In have become a stronghold on Bowling Green's campus. With April being Sexual Assault Awareness Month, get involved with the movement by using the hashtags StepUpStepIn and BGItsOnUs.
