2018 BGSU MEN'S SOCCER SCHEDULE
The Falcons' schedule includes three matches against schools that advanced to at least the Round of 16 in the NCAA Championships last season. All three of those matchups will be held under the lights at Cochrane.
"Players come to to BG because they want to play against the best teams in the nation, and that is what we will get this fall," said Nichols, who enters his 10th season at the BGSU helm. "The non-conference schedule includes some national powerhouses and regional rivalries that will prepare us for the rigors of MAC play."
The home slate includes a matchup with Akron as part of the program's Alumni Weekend festivities, along with visits from Mid-American Conference foes Western Michigan and SIUE. The Zips and Broncos each participated in the NCAA Championships last season.
Michigan State is the third 2017 NCAA tourney team to come to Cochrane in the fall of 2018, while Northern Kentucky, Valparaiso and Wright State all will venture to BGSU as well.
The road portion of the schedule includes matches vs. Ohio State and Penn State in non-league play, and Northern Illinois and West Virginia during MAC competition.
NKU comes to Cochrane to open the season on Saturday, Aug. 25, as the Falcons alternate home and road contests over the first two weeks. BGSU will host Wright State (Aug. 31) and Michigan State (Sept. 7) during that time, while hitting the road to face Penn State (Aug. 28) and Western Illinois (Sept. 2).
A trip to Ohio State (Sept. 11) begins a season-long four-match road swing, which also sees the Orange and Brown meet Wofford (Sept. 15), Cleveland State (Sept. 18) and Fort Wayne (Sept. 22). BG closes the month of September with a home matchup vs. Valparaiso (Sept. 29), before opening the month of October by diving into the MAC schedule.
Defending conference tournament champion Akron comes to town on Saturday, Oct. 6, on the first of five-straight Saturdays which see the Falcons face a MAC foe. After a trip to IUPUI (Oct. 9), BG takes on Northern Illinois in DeKalb (Oct. 13).
The following weekend (Oct. 20) sees BGSU meet Western Michigan, the defending MAC regular-season champ, at Cochrane. The Falcons' final road swing features matches vs. Cincinnati (Oct. 23) and West Virginia (Oct. 27), before SIUE comes to BG as the teams close the regular-season slate on Saturday evening, Nov. 3.
The MAC Tournament is scheduled for the following weekend, as the top-four teams in the final standings will converge upon the site of the regular-season champ for the semifinals (Nov. 9) and championship match (Nov. 11).
Prior to the start of the regular season, the Falcons will play three scrimmages, including two at home. BGSU will face Dayton (Aug. 11) and Notre Dame (Aug. 15) at Cochrane, before venturing to Duquesne (Aug. 18) in a one final tune-up for the regular season.
"This schedule presents some great opportunities, but the margin for error is tight," said Nichols. "We will need to be dialed in for each and every match."
BGSU finished the 2017 season with an overall record of 7-9-1. Five of the team's losses came by one goal on the road to nationally-ranked opponents. Nichols and his staff had seven seniors on the '17 roster.
