BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University men's golf program and head coach John Powers have announced the addition of two student-athletes for the upcoming season. Curtis Hughes (Belle River, Ontario, Canada / Tecumseh Vista Academy) and Keagan Younkin (Grove City, Ohio / St. Charles Prep) will join the team as freshmen for the 2018-19 season.
"We are very excited about our incoming class with Curtis and Keagan," said head coach John Powers. "These guys have grown up around the game and have won many times on the junior circuit. I am looking forward to seeing them jump in and learn what it takes to win at the college level. They are athletic and capable of improving very quickly, especially with a veteran presence on our team for the 2018-2019 season!"
Hughes, a native of Belle River, Ontario in Canada, is a 2018 graduate of Tecumseh Vista Academy. The future Falcon was a semifinalist at the 2017 Michigan Junior State Amateur, while also placing fifth in the Ontario High School Championship. Hughes shot a 67 in the second round of the 2017 Ontario Men's Amateur Championship after earning medalist honors in qualifying with a 69. Hughes, who intends to major in business marketing at BGSU, compiled a tournament average of 72.8 and the No. 1 ranking in Ontario during his junior golf career.
"Curtis has an enthusiasm for the game of golf that is contagious," said Powers. "He has competed at a very high level already and will push others around him to be better."
Younkin graduated from St. Charles Prep and is from Grove City, Ohio. He shot 69-72 at the Central Catholic League Championship, earning him Player of the Year honors in the process. Younkin was a medalist at the Mount Vernon Chapel Hill Invitational after he carded a 69. Younkin, who plans on being a business management major at BGSU, led his team to a runner-up finish at the 2016 Ohio High School State Championships.
"Keagan is a great kid and has loads of potential," commented Powers. "He is strong, athletic, and comes from a very challenging program, which will help him adapt to the college environment very quickly."
