President's Day? Washington, Kennedy Sweep MAC Weekly Awards
October 15, 2019 | Women's Soccer
Duo helped BGSU to a pair of come-from-behind wins last week
A pair of Bowling Green State University women's soccer standouts have swept the Mid-American Conference weekly awards. Senior Chelsee Washington has been named the MAC Offensive Player of the Week, while classmate Maureen Kennedy has captured the MAC Defensive-Player-of-the-Week award. The conference office announced the award winners on Tuesday morning (Oct. 15).
Washington earns the MAC Offensive P-O-T-W award for the first time this season and the third time in her BGSU career. Kennedy earns the honor for the second consecutive week and the fifth time in her BGSU career.
Â
Additionally, Kennedy was named to the Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Week, drawing a mention from that web site for the second-straight Tuesday. She earned honorable mention on last week's TDS National Team of the Week.
And, redshirt junior Nikki Cox joined Kennedy on this week's TDS team of the week, earning honorable mention.
Washington, a native of Carrollton, Texas (Hebron H.S.), had a stellar week as the Falcons won two more games to improve to 6-0-0 in the MAC. She had five points, including a pair of goals on the week, and both of her goals came in the 90th minute of the match or later.
On Thursday (Oct. 10), Washington had a three-point game against Central Michigan. She had an assist on BG's first-half goal, then scored a goal of her own. The latter goal tied the match with just 35 seconds left in regulation. She was indirectly involved in the winning goal in overtime as well, as her cross into the box began a sequence which saw sophomore Sarah Allen hit the crossbar with a shot and freshman Kennedy White score on the rebound for a 3-2 BGSU win. White's goal came in the 110th minute.
On Sunday (Oct. 13) at Eastern Michigan, Washington hit the crossbar with a second-half shot, and after BG tied the match with just 19.3 seconds to go, she scored the winning goal in the 95th minute for a 2-1 victory. It marked her second 'Golden Goal' of the season and the seventh game-winning goal of her career. She is only the third player in BGSU history to score two OT goals in the same season.

Â
Kennedy, a native of Cypress, Calif. (Los Alamitos H.S.), again made major contributions at both ends of the field as the Falcons downed the Chippewas and the Eagles. Kennedy had three points on the week, with a goal and an assist – both coming on game-tying goals with under 30 seconds to go.
On Thursday, Kennedy, the 2018 MAC Defensive Player of the Year, had an assist on Washington's tying goal with just 25 seconds to go in regulation, as the Falcons went on to defeat CMU, 3-2 in double overtime. She served a ball toward the box that was headed into the path of the onrushing Washington.
Then, on Sunday, BGSU was down, 1-0, when White was fouled several yards outside of the penalty area. With the clock ticking down, Kennedy stepped up and blasted a free kick into the net with just 19.3 seconds remaining in the second half. Washington, as mentioned above, would score the winning goal in overtime to down the Eagles, 2-1. Additionally, earlier in the week, she was named one of just 10 finalists for the Senior CLASS Award.
