BGSU Downs Duquesne, 1-0, to End Non-League Slate
September 07, 2025 | Women's Soccer
Stransky's strike, combined with stellar defense, moves Falcons to 5-1-1 on the year
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Junior Emma Stransky scored in the 27th minute, and the Bowling Green University women's soccer team maintained that lead for the rest of the afternoon, as the Falcons ended the non-conference schedule with a 1-0 win over Duquesne University Sunday afternoon (Sept. 7) at Cochrane Stadium.
With the win, the Falcons end non-league play with a 5-1-1 record, the second-best start to a season in program history. The Dukes drop to 4-2-0 on the year.
Sophomore Haley Wolf drew the assist on Stransky's winner. The play began when redshirt soph Audrey Oliver stole a Duquesne pass near midfield. Oliver quickly played the ball ahead to Stransky, who created some space before sending it out side to Wolf.
Wolf, streaking down the right side of the pitch, ran onto the ball and hit a cross into the box. Stransky, standing near the six-yard line on the left side of the goal, headed the ball back across and into the right side of the net, for what proved to be the winner.
Duquesne entered the afternoon tied for 12th in the nation in goals per game (3.20), but Payton O'Malley and the BGSU defense kept a clean sheet vs. the Dukes. O'Malley had four saves en route to her third shutout of the season.
For the visitors, Ali Hughes had one save.
NOTE OF THE DAY
• The Falcons, as mentioned, are now 5-1-1 on the season. That is the second-best seven-game start in program history.
• BGSU began the spring of 2021 with a 6-1-0 record, ending that abbreviated season with a 6-1-1 mark and a trip to the NCAA Championships.
• The 2025 season is the 29th in the history of the program, which began in 1997.
ALSO NOTEWORTHY
• Junior Emma Stransky's goal was her team-leading third of the season and the 10th of her BGSU career. She now has 25 points as a Falcon.
• Six of Stransky's 10 career goals have been game-winners.
• Sophomore Haley Wolf now has a two-game point-scoring streak. After recording her first career point with an assist in Thursday's (Sept. 4) win at Robert Morris, Wolf had the lone assist on Stransky's winner on Sunday.
• Sophomore Payton O'Malley kept her third clean sheet of the season and the fifth of her BGSU career.
• O'Malley has a goals-against average of 0.57 this season, with a save percentage of .867. In 16 career matches, she has a GAA of 1.13.
• Freshman Mia Gatz and redshirt sophomore Audrey Oliver each made the first start of their respective collegiate careers. A total of 17 different Falcons have started at least one match in 2025.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The first strong scoring chance for either team came just under eight minutes into the match. Duquesne's Kaitlyn Killinger received a pass near the 18-yard line on the right side, cut toward the center of the field and forced BGSU goalkeeper Payton O'Malley into a diving save at the near post.
• With just over 20 minutes gone, sophomore Haley Wolf took a pass from junior Emma Stransky as she headed into the box on the right side. Wolf played a cross toward the 'danger area,' but DU 'keeper Ali Hughes was able to dive and grab the ball just before Ellie Pool arrived.
• Stransky got the Falcons on the scoreboard in the 27th minute, heading home Wolf's cross for what would prove to be the winning goal. Several Falcons were open in the box on the play, as Pool had eluded her would-be defender and was in the area as well.
• Just over 11 minutes remained before the half when Evie Underhill made a crowd-pleasing play near midfield on the sideline in front of the bleachers, saving the ball from going out of bounds and finding Isabella Mazzaferro streaking down the pitch. Mazzaferro played a right-side cross to fellow junior Ella Kane, but Kane's shot – off of a short-hop – went over the crossbar.
• Five minutes later, freshman Quinn O'Neil took a pass from junior Gabby Lamparty on the left side of the field. O'Neil eluded a defender and crossed the ball into the center. A DU player knocked the ball away, but Emily Hollar was able to poke the ball toward goal, where it was grabbed by Hughes.
• Under 18 minutes remained in the match when a BGSU giveaway gave the Dukes a scoring chance. Killinger ran onto the ball near the end line and played a cross, which was knocked away by Jayna Searles. A DU player put the ball back into the box before Emme Butera finally cleared it out of BG's defensive end of the field.
• With six minutes to go, Falcon fans experiences another nervy moment, as a corner kick by the Dukes glanced off of the top of the cross before Stransky was able to knock it out of the box.
UP NEXT
• The Falcons will open Mid-American Conference action next Sunday (Sept. 14) when Kent State comes to Cochrane. That match is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start, and admission is free.
• Then, the Orange and Brown will head to Athens for a meeting with Ohio University on Thursday, Sept. 18, before ending the month of September with home contests vs. Western Michigan (Sept. 21) and Central Michigan (Sept. 28) on back-to-back Sundays.
