Senior goalkeeper named to first team; junior center-back earns second-team honors
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
>> Falcons have two All-Region Team Selections for the first time in five years
>> Mwembia is first Falcon named to the first team since 2014
>> Senior 'keeper is one of just two MAC players to earn first-team accolades
A pair of Bowling Green State University men's soccer standouts have been named to the United Soccer Coaches All-North Region Team, the organization has announced. Senior Anthony Mwembia was named to the USC All-Region First Team, while junior Achille Robin earned second-team honors.
Both players have been named to the all-region team for the first time.
Mwembia is the first Falcon to earn all-region first-team accolades since Pat Flynn in 2014. That 2014 season was the last time the Falcons landed a pair of players on the all-region squad, as Flynn earned first-team accolades while Ryan James was named to the third team.
Mwembia is one of just two Mid-American Conference players to be named to the first team, along with SIUE's Jorge Gonzalez. BGSU is one of only two MAC teams with multiple players named to the USC All-Region Team. Akron also had two players named to the squad (with a second- and a third-team selection), while SIUE, Western Michigan and West Virginia each had one player selected.
Mwembia, a native of Toulouse, France, started all 21 matches for the Falcons this season, and had 63 saves, 11 shutouts and a goals-against average of just 0.83. Mwembia's total of 11 clean sheets was one shy of the school record, and was the highest by a Falcon 'keeper since BGSU Hall-of-Famer Scott Vallow and the Falcons had 12 shutouts in 1998. Mwembia's final shutout came on the road against Akron in the MAC Tournament, helping the Falcons advance to the league tourney's championship match. He allowed only three goals over the last eight matches of the season. Mwembia, an All-MAC First-Team selection for the second time in his career, finished with career totals of 30 shutouts and 248 saves. He posted the second-highest career shutout total in school history, and wound up seventh on the saves list.
Robin, a native of Les Sables d'Olonne, France, was a key contributor at both ends of the pitch in 2019. From his center-back position, he helped the Falcons keep those 11 clean sheets, and at the offensive end of the field, Robin, the lone Falcon to play every second of every match in 2019, ranked second on the team in both goals and points. Robin had five goals and 14 points on the year, and he tied for second on the Falcons with four assists. His last two goals, on back-to-back Tuesdays, were game-winning tallies, including a 'Golden Goal' vs. Northern Illinois in the MAC Tournament's quarterfinal round. when he converted a 95th-minute penalty kick. Robin was named to the College Soccer News Team of the Week twice this year, and joined Mwembia on the All-MAC First Team.
BGSU closed the 2019 season with an overall record of 13-7-1. The Falcons posted a double-digit win total for the first time since 2014 and just the second time since 1998. BGSU more than doubled the team's win total from a year ago. Mwembia was one of five seniors on the 26-man 2019 roster.
