March 31, 2019 | Men's Soccer
BGSU to face Ohio State in final
The Bowling Green State University men's soccer team has started the spring season with a pair of victories. In the process, head coach Eric Nichols and the Falcons have clinched a title.
With wins over Cleveland State and Dayton, the Falcons have clinched no worse than a tie for first place in the Gold Group in the Columbus Crew S.C. Spring League, and BG owns the tiebreakers.

BGSU downed CSU, 3-1, with Charlie Maciejewski scoring twice and Kale Nichols adding a goal. Then, a second-half tally by Zach Buescher gave the Falcons a 1-0 win over Dayton on Saturday (March 30). With one match left to play in the round-robin portion of the schedule, BGSU (2-0-0) leads with the Vikings and Flyers (both 1-1-0) by a game, and the Falcons hold the tiebreaker with both programs by virtue of the head-to-head results.
The Crew S.C. Spring League consists of two groups of four teams. Each team plays the other three teams in the group, and all eight teams will converge upon Columbus on April 14, where the coinciding seeds will match up (the first-place team in the Gold group plays the first-place team in the Black group, second-place Gold group team plays second-place Black group team, etc.).
BGSU, as mentioned, has won the Gold group. The Falcons will host Purdue Fort Wayne on Saturday (April 6), and BG will then meet Ohio State on April 14 in Columbus. The Buckeyes have clinched the Black group championship. Â
"The purpose for this league is to create an environment that inspires a similar intensity and passion as the fall," said Nichols. "Both of our games have felt like fall games and have been great for us in terms of squad evaluation and preparation for the challenges we will face in the fall."
Following the PFW and OSU contests, BGSU will wrap up the spring slate with two more matches at Cochrane. The Falcons will face Tiffin on Friday, April 19. Then, a veritable plethora of former Falcon men's soccer standouts return to town on Saturday, April 27, for the team's annual Alumni Match. BGSU ended the 2018 season with an overall record of 6-7-4, and the Falcons posted a 2-1-2 mark in Mid-American Conference play. BG, picked to place fifth in the six-team conference, finished second and earned a first-round bye for the league tourney. The Falcons have finished second in the league twice in the last three seasons. BG went 5-1-2 over the final eight contests of the regular season, including a six-match unbeaten streak, the program's longest since 1997.
