Indianapolis, Ind. – Bowling Green State University has tied a school record as four teams were recognized today by the NCAA for APR excellence. Men's cross country, men's golf, women's golf and gymnastics earned NCAA Public Recognition for ranking among the top 10 percent in their respective sport in the most recent multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR). It is the second consecutive year in which those four programs were honored.
"We continue to strive for excellence in the classroom, on the field of competition and in our community," Bob Moosbrugger, Director of Athletics, said. "This was another outstanding effort by our student-athletes and coaches in gymnastics, men's cross country, and the men's and women's golf programs. These successes are important to our academic and athletic mission. Thank you to the dedicated staff in the student-athlete academic services area, who play a large role in the academic careers of all of our student-athletes."
Throughout the 12-team Mid-American Conference, only 38 teams received NCAA Public Recognition. BGSU was one of four MAC schools with at least four teams honored. Miami led with five, while Central Michigan and Kent State also had four. All 12 MAC institutions had at least one team recognized this year.
The women's golf program earned NCAA Public Recognition for the seventh consecutive year, while men's cross country was honored for the sixth straight year. Gymnastics has now been named for four straight years, while the men's golf program was honored for the second time in program history (and second time in a row).
BGSU has had a school record four teams recognized for the 2004-05, 2013-14, 2016-17 and now 2017-18 school years.
APRs for all Division I teams will be released May 8. The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams nationally. Teams must meet a certain academic threshold to qualify for the postseason, and they also can face penalties for continued low academic performance.
The scores required to be in the top ten ranged from 987 to a perfect 1,000.
Four schools led all of Division I with 18 programs each that earned Public Recognition Awards – Brown, Columbia, Dartmouth and Holy Cross. By percentage, Villanova led with 77 percent of its squads receiving recognitions, followed by Columbia and Holy Cross, each with 75 percent.
The Ivy League was the top-scoring conference in both number of teams and percentage of teams honored, with 105 (or 47.3 percent), followed by the Patriot League with 95.
The APR measures eligibility, graduation, and retention each semester or quarter, providing a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in each sport. The most recent APRs are multi-year rates based on scores from the 2014-15, 2015-16, 2016-17, and 2017-18 academic years.
