Falcons Post Best MAC Men’s All-Sports Finish In 17 Years
May 30, 2019 | General
Cleveland, Ohio – Bowling Green State University's men's varsity athletic teams finished fourth in the 2018-19 Reese standings, the highest finish for the BGSU Athletics Department in 17 years. The Falcons averaged 7.916 rank points on the year.
The Reese and Jacoby trophies are presented to the top performing athletic departments in the Mid-American Conference. Points are awarded for each team's finish, with the overall total averaged to account for the different number of sports sponsored by each department in the MAC. Teams earn 12 points for a first place finish down to one point for a last place result.
The men's trophy is named for former MAC Commissioner David E. Reese, who served the conference from 1946-64. The women's trophy is named for former MAC Commissioner Fred Jacoby, who served from 1971-82 and is credited with incorporating women's athletics into the conference structure.
Among the department's six MAC men's sports (hockey is not included as it competes in the WCHA), the Falcons finished in the top three in the league standings in three. Men's cross country and men's soccer both earned MAC runner-up finishes and men's basketball finished third in the regular season. Men's golf added its best result since 2013 with a fifth place finish. Baseball finished eighth in the league standings and football was tied for ninth.
Miami won the Reese trophy with an average of 8.81 points, followed by Buffalo at 8.571 points. Akron was third with 8.00 points, followed by Bowling Green. Eastern Michigan was fifth and Western Michigan finished sixth. Ohio, Kent State, Toledo, Central Michigan, Northern Illinois and Ball State placed seventh through 12th. BGSU placed 11th in the final Jacoby standings.
Bowling Green's fourth place finish in the Reese standings is the department's best since a runner-up result in 2001-02. The department was runner-up in the Jacoby standings in 2006-07. BGSU Athletics won the Reese trophy in 1958-59, 1971-72, 1993-94 and 1994-95. The department finished atop the Jacoby standings in 1987-88, 1991-92, 1992-93 and 1993-94.
