The Falcons' 2019 slate includes three matches against schools that qualified for the NCAA Championships last season, with two of those teams advancing to the round of eight and one making it to the championship match of the College Cup.
Nichols and the Falcons will play six matches against teams that finished the 2018 season ranked in the top 50 of the RPI.
"We have a lot of momentum with our program right now, so we are looking for a fall schedule that will challenge us to bring out our best," said Nichols, who enters his 11th season at the BGSU helm.
"The 2019 slate is exactly what we want. Not only will the caliber of opponent challenge us, but so will factors such as extended periods of away games."
The home slate includes matchups with Ohio State and defending Mid-American Conference regular-season champion West Virginia, along with visits from Cleveland State, Cincinnati, Canisius, Purdue Fort Wayne and Northern Illinois.
All seven of BGSU's home matches are scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
The Falcons will play 11 regular-season matches away from home, including weekend trips to Pittsburgh, Pa., and Evanston, Ill., to start the season. BGSU will open the season with four-straight matches on the road, facing Duquesne and Robert Morris in the season's first weekend.
Then, BGSU travels to Northwestern, where the Falcons will face Wisconsin along with the host Wildcats. The Badgers are the first of seven Falcon foes who recorded a double-digit win total last fall.
The Falcons then will end the month of September with four home contests in a five-match span. Nichols and Company will play a third consecutive Big Ten Conference opponent when Ohio State comes to Cochrane for the Falcons' home opener on Friday, Sept. 13. The matchup with the Buckeyes begins a three-match homestand which also sees the Brown and Orange face Cleveland State and Cincinnati.
The UC match, on Saturday, Sept. 21, is part of the program's Alumni Weekend.
BG returns to the road to face Kentucky, a 19-win program a year ago. The Wildcats won the Conference USA regular-season and tournament titles and advanced to the round of eight in the NCAA Championships.
October begins with four consecutive road matches. BG meets a pair of Horizon League foes on back-to-back Tuesdays, before traveling to Akron to begin the MAC schedule on Saturday, Oct. 12. The meeting with the Zips marks the first of five-straight Saturdays in which the Falcons face a conference opponent.
BGSU heads to SIUE the following weekend, before returning home for the next two matches. The Falcons will face four-straight teams that won at least 10 games in 2018, beginning with Purdue Fort Wayne. Then, West Virginia comes to Cochrane on Saturday. Oct. 26.
November begins with trips to Western Michigan and Wright State, two programs that went a combined 24-9-6 a year ago, before Northern Illinois ventures to BG to wrap up regular-season play. That match, on Saturday, Nov. 9, will be the Falcons' Senior Night as well.
The MAC Tournament begins with first-round matches on Tuesday, Nov. 12, with the top-two teams earning byes. Those two programs will join the first-round winners at the site of the regular-season champ for the conference tourney semifinals (Nov. 15) and championship (Nov. 17).
Prior to the start of the season, the Falcons will hit the road for a pair of scrimmages, including a neutral-site exhibition against reigning Big Ten champion Indiana in the Indianapolis area. BG also will travel to Dayton in a final tune-up prior to the regular-season opener at Duquesne.
"This is the type of schedule that will either bring out our best and prepare us for postseason play, or it will break us," said Nichols. "It is hard to say which way it will go now, but I can say with confidence that everyone in the program is eager to take it on!"
BGSU ended the 2018 season with an overall record of 6-7-4, and the Falcons posted a 2-1-2 mark in MAC play. BG, picked to place fifth in the six-team conference, finished second and earned a first-round bye for the league tourney. The Falcons have finished second in the league twice in the last three seasons. BG went 5-1-2 over the final eight contests of the regular season, including a six-match unbeaten streak, the program's longest since 1997.
