BGSU Men's Soccer: Falcons are Back in Action
August 16, 2019 | Men's Soccer
The Bowling Green State University men's soccer team has officially begun preparing for the 2019 season. The Falcons took part in several organizational meetings on Tuesday (Aug. 13), with a photo day and a green-screen shoot included in the itinerary as well. On Wednesday morning (Aug. 14), head coach Eric Nichols and Company held the first practice of the preseason schedule.
Nichols and his staff welcome back a total of 16 letterwinners, including seven starters, from last year's club. The Falcons finished with an overall record of 6-7-4 and a Mid-American Conference mark of 2-1-2, placing second in the league standings.

(NOTE: The headshots and team photo from Tuesday's photo day have been added to the 2019 roster.)
Nichols and his staff lost four stellar seniors off of last year's roster, but the returning corps includes five players that started at least 14 of last year's 17 matches, and a total of seven players who posted double-digit start totals.
Senior goalkeeper Anthony Mwembia is back after playing every minute of the 2019 season between the posts. Mwembia had a goals-against average of 1.38 last year, with a GAA of just 0.91 in MAC regular-season action. He has started 52 matches over the last three seasons.
The Falcons had a balanced scoring attack last fall, and BG returns seven players who scored at least one goal in 2018. Senior Charlie Maciejewski and juniors Chris Sullivan and Vinny Worner each had a pair of goals last year. Sullivan and Worner scored seven points apiece to tie for the scoring lead among returnees, while Maciejewski's two goals each came in overtime, as he recorded a 'Golden Goal' in back-to-back road victories.
Junior Zach Buescher started all 17 matches, while senior Tom Wrobel, junior Achille Robin and sophomore Jensen Lukacsko each made at least 10 starts in 2018. Senior Chris Brennan, slowed by injury last fall, is the leading career scorer among BG returnees, with 11 goals and 29 points over his first three seasons in the Orange and Brown.
BGSU, picked to place fifth in the six-team conference in 2018, finished second and earned a first-round bye for the league tourney. The Falcons have finished second in the league twice in the last three seasons. BG went 5-1-2 over the final eight contests of the regular season, including a six-match unbeaten streak, the program's longest since 1997.
The Falcons will play a pair of scrimmages away from home (vs. Indiana on Monday {Aug. 19] and Dayton on Aug. 23), before opening the regular season on Friday, Aug. 30, at Duquesne. The home opener is set for two weeks later (Friday, Sept. 13) vs. Ohio State. Again this season, admission is free to all BGSU home regular-season matches.
