Senior goalkeeper signs professional contract
One of the top goalkeepers in Bowling Green State University men's soccer history will continue his career at the next level. On Thursday (Jan. 16), Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC announced the signing of Anthony Mwembia.
Mwembia has signed a one-year contract with the Riverhounds with a club option for the 2021 season, pending USSF and USL Championship approval.
"Anthony is a well-rounded goalkeeper with the ability to make the big save," said Pittsburgh head coach Bob Lilley. "He is a player who we feel can develop quickly in our environment."
In the fall of 2019, Mwembia wrapped up a stellar four-year career between the posts for the Falcons. A native of Toulouse, France, he started all 21 matches for the Falcons in his senior season, and had 63 saves, 11 shutouts and a goals-against average of just 0.83. Mwembia's total of 11 clean sheets was one shy of the school record, and was the highest by a Falcon 'keeper since BGSU Hall-of-Famer Scott Vallow and the Falcons had 12 shutouts in 1998.
Mwembia's final shutout came on the road against Akron in the MAC Tournament, helping the Falcons advance to the league tourney's championship match. He allowed only three goals over the last eight matches of the season.
Mwembia, an All-MAC First-Team selection for the second time in his career, finished with career totals of 30 shutouts and 248 saves. He posted the second-highest career shutout total in school history, and wound up seventh on the saves list.
Mwembia was named to the United Soccer Coaches All-Region Team in 2019, becoming the first Falcon in five years to earn all-region first-team accolades. He was one of just two Mid-American Conference players to be named to the first team.
Mwembia joins fellow Falcon Ryan James on the Riverhounds' roster. James, a four-year (2012-15) standout at BGSU, started 31 matches for the Riverhounds in 2019.
Mwembia and the Falcons closed the 2019 season with an overall record of 13-7-1. The Falcons posted a double-digit win total for the first time since 2014 and just the second time since 1998. BGSU more than doubled the team's win total from a year ago. Mwembia was one of five seniors on the 26-man 2019 roster.
