MVC preseason favorites score a pair of second-half goals in Des Moines
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Preseason Missouri Valley Conference favorite Drake University got a pair of second-half goals, downing the Bowling Green State University men's soccer team by a 2-0 score on Saturday night (Oct. 18) at Mediacom Stadium.
The Bulldogs (6-0-6, 1-0-3 MVC), who entered the match as one of just seven undefeated teams in the nation, took the lead just over four minutes after halftime when Landon Benge scored on a rebound. A penalty kick with less than six minutes remaining in the match capped the scoring.
Tomas Butkovic made three saves for the hosts, while Jason Ball had two stops for the Falcons (5-7-2, 1-3-0 MVC).
Drake now owns a 12-match unbeaten streak. The Bulldogs' last loss came against the Falcons in the semifinals of the 2024 MVC Tournament (Nov. 13, 2024).
HOW IT HAPPENED
• On a gusty night in Des Moines, the host Bulldogs had a chance in the seventh minute, as a pass from the right side found Jonathan Mendez in the box. But, BGSU goalkeeper Jason Ball was able to come off of his line and block a shot attempt by the DU midfielder.
• After a near steal by the Falcons, a handball call was whistled on the hosts just outside the penalty area. Bennett Painter took the ensuing kick, tapping it to Saul Rios, and a hard Rios shot was blocked out of play for a corner kick.
• BGSU wound up with three corners in the span of just over a minute. Off of the third corner, a Caio Tascheto header hit the far post and caromed into a crowded six-yard box before the Bulldogs momentarily cleared it away. The Falcons got the ball back, and Andrew Shaffer hit a hard shot from the left side that forced Tomas Bukovic into a diving stop.
• Moments later, a long throw-in by Rios was headed out of the box by DU. Anthony Hernandez poked the ball to Trace Terry, who got a lot of force behind a header. The shot sailed over a diving Butkovic but bounced just wide of the far post.
• With 10 minutes remaining in the half, a right-side cross by Hernandez found Shaffer near the far post, but Shaffer's shot glanced off of the woodwork. BGSU regained possession soon after the ensuing DU goal kick, and Painter blasted a shot that went just over the crossbar.
• Just over four minutes into the second half, the Bulldogs got on the scoreboard. Ball saved a hard shot by Crew Alvarez from just outside the 18-yard box. Landon Benge, however, was first to the rebound and knocked it home.
• With just over 20 minutes remaining in the match, Shaffer played a diagonal ball into the penalty area. The ball was deflected to Hernandez, who turned and fired a hard shot, but Butkovic went to the ground to make the save.
• A penalty kick was awarded to the Bulldogs with 5:39 to go, and Damian Segura converted to double his team's lead.
• With the Falcons pressing forward, DU had a scoring chance on a counterattack in the final seconds of the match, but a Preston Kipnusu shot hit the post.
UP NEXT
• The Falcons return to the road next weekend, facing Western Michigan in Kalamazoo on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 25). That contest will begin at 12:00 p.m. at the WMU Soccer Complex.
