HUNTINGTON, W.VA. – Nationally-ranked Marshall University converted a penalty kick late in the second half, posting a 1-0 win over the Bowling Green State University men's soccer team Saturday afternoon (Feb. 27) at Hoops Family Field.
With the win, the Thundering Herd improved to 3-0-1 on the year. Marshall entered the week ranked No. 9 in the nation in the Top Drawer Soccer top-25 poll and No. 16 in the College Soccer News poll. The Falcons drop to 2-1-0.
The lone goal came in the 74th minute. After a foul was whistled on the Falcons inside the 18-yard box, Jan-Erik Leinhos converted the ensuing PK for what would prove to be the game's only scoring.
GOALS / KEY MOMENTS
• Midway through the first half, BGSU goalkeeper Logan Kowalczyk made a save on a Milo Yosef breakaway attempt after a steal. The Falcon sophomore also made a first-half save on a Gabriel Alves effort in the 34th minute.
• WIth just over six minutes remaining before the intermission, the Herd won the game's first corner kick. But, the Falcons' defense dealt with the ensuing short corner very well, and the ball rolled over the end line for a BG goal kick.
• In the 53rd minute, Achille Robin was tripped approximately 18 yards from the goal line, just outside the left corner of the box. Chris Sullivan took the ensuing free kick, and fired a low hard shot that eluded the diving effort of MU goalkeeper Oliver Semmle. But, the ball hit the near post.
• Roughly three minutes later, Jan-Erik Leinhos entered the penalty area at the other end of the pitch and hit a curving shot that hit the crossbar near the far post.
• Several minutes after that, Kowalczyk made a save on Yosef, and he also stopped a header by Pedro Dolabella in the 68th minute.
