BG Football Hosts Annual Sharpie Shootout
June 25, 2021 | Football
Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University football program hosted the annual Sharpie Shootout on Friday, June 11 at Stone Ridge Golf Club followed by a memorial for Joe Sharp at Doyt L. Perry Stadium. Sharp, the founder of the event and long-time BGSU football equipment manager, passed away in December.
"The Sharpie Shootout was an incredible event," said Head Football Coach Scot Loeffler. "It was awesome to get many of our former Falcons back to BG to celebrate the lives of Glenn and Joe Sharp. We look forward to this Fall when everyone is able to come back to campus again to continue the celebration of the 'Sharpie Boys' legacies and BGSU Football."

"I was completely overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support from the Football alumni" said Joe's wife, Shelly Sharp. "It was a great tribute to Joe and the large turnout really meant a lot to our family. We are just so proud of both Joe and Glenn for their years of service to BGSU and the number of lives that they touched. The memorial helped us all reach some kind of closure, and I am grateful for all of the work behind the scenes by those who helped to plan and organize such a special event. Thank you all!"
The Sharpie Shootout was founded in 2000 as a tribute to Glenn Sharp and now serves as a memorial for both Joe and Glenn Sharp. The event replaced the Doyt Perry Golf Outing and serves as an alumni engagement event for the football program. The engagement efforts by Mark Miller ('78) and Cal Bowers ('96), both alumni of the program, have been instrumental in the continued growth and success of this annual event.
This year's golf outing saw a total of 26 teams participate, including a 135 alumni from the program returning to Bowling Green. The event sold out and saw alumni flying in from across the United States, from Florida to California. Each decade from the 1950s on was represented at the event, including five members of the 1959 National Championship team.
