Falcons Face Marshall in College Spring League's Championship Match
April 13, 2022 | Men's Soccer
All eight teams converge upon Columbus for this weekend's action
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University men's soccer team has advanced to the College Spring League's championship match. Head coach Eric Nichols and the Falcons, after winning the CSL's North Division crown, will take on South Division champion Marshall on Saturday (April 16) at 5:00 p.m. at historic Crew Stadium in Columbus.
All eight teams in the CSL will converge upon Columbus for the final day of action. Louisville will meet Michigan in the seventh-place match at 9:30 a.m., followed by Ohio State and Cleveland State in the fifth-place contest (12:00 p.m.), Dayton vs. Akron in the third-place match (2:30 p.m.) and the Falcons and Thundering Herd in the final.
"It's been an awesome competition again this spring," said Nichols. "We love testing ourselves against some of the best teams in the nation, and that's exactly what we get to do again on Saturday."
The College Spring League, which began in the spring of 2019, consists of two groups of four teams. Each team plays the other three teams in their group to determine the group champions and the final day's matches.
BGSU posted wins over Cleveland State and Akron and advanced past Michigan via penalty kicks to capture the North crown. Teams earn three point for a win, two points for a shootout win and one point for a shootout loss.
Kyle Cusimano scored in both the CSU and U-M matches, while Alberto Anaya found the back of the net against the Vikings and Sergi Martinez scored the lone goal of the Akron match. Brendan Graves has allowed just one goal in three matches so far in CSL play.
Marshall went 2-0-1 in the South, defeating Dayton and Louisville while tying Ohio State.
All eight teams in the CSL were ranked 109th or higher in the final RPI rankings of the fall 2021 season, with five of those eight teams ranked 41st or higher. That quintet includes the Falcons (40th) as well as the Herd (20th).
There is no cost for admission to Saturday's games, but there will be a $10 parking fee.
Ohio State won the inaugural College Spring League crown in 2019 before it went on hiatus in 2020 (due to the COVID-19 pandemic) and 2021 (the fall 2020 season was moved to the spring of 2021).
The Falcons finished the fall 2021 season with a record of 11-6-3, and BGSUÂ advanced to the second round of the NCAA Championships. BG picked up a 1-0 victory at Louisville in the first round of the national tourney, marking the fifth NCAA Tournament victory in program history, and the first since 1997.
