Andrew Shaffer Called Up to U.S. Virgin Islands National Team
November 14, 2023 | Men's Soccer
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (BGSU Strategic Communications) – Bowling Green State University men's soccer standout Andrew Shaffer has been called up by the U.S. Virgin Islands National Team in time for the team's CONCACAF Nations League match vs. Aruba on Thursday evening (Nov. 16).
"It's a huge honor to represent the Virgin Islands," Shaffer told the Falcon Media Sports Network. "Being able to play in the CONCACAF Nations League is a unique opportunity and an experience I will not forget."
Shaffer recently completed his sophomore season for the Falcons.
"We are thrilled for Andrew," said BGSU head coach Eric Nichols. "This is such a unique and special experience for him. We are all excited to watch him play and root on Team Virgin Islands."
Shaffer's brother, Alex and William, also received call-ups by the U.S. Virgin Islands National Team. Both Alex and William are members of the men's soccer team at Ohio Northern University.
"(Alex and William being called up) makes this an even cooler experience," Shaffer told FMSN. "We grew up playing together in the yard, and being able to share the stage with them in a competition like the Nations League is pretty neat.
"I'm very excited to be playing a home game on St. Croix so some of my extended family can make it. My uncle, who lives on St. Croix, will be there."
Shaffer, a native of Galena, Ohio (St. Francis DeSales), played in all 18 matches for the Falcons in 2023, making 16 starts. He tied for fourth on the team with eight points, on three goals and a pair of assists. Shaffer scored a pair of goals in the season-opening win over Cleveland State, recording the tying and winning goals in that 3-2 victory, and also found the back of the net in a Missouri Valley Conference win over Evansville.
For his efforts in the CSU match, he was named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week.
Shaffer has 16 career points in 29 matches with the Falcons, having scored eight points (on three goals and two assists) in each of his first two years.
