Nichols, Falcons Announce 2023 Schedule
May 02, 2023 | Men's Soccer
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Bowling Green State University men's soccer coach Eric Nichols has announced his team's schedule for the 2023 season. The Falcons will play a 17-match regular-season slate that includes eight contests inside the friendly confines of Cochrane Stadium.
The fall of 2023 will mark the Falcons' first season as an affiliate member of the Missouri Valley Conference. The move to the MVC came on the heels of the Mid-American Conference suspending sponsorship in men's soccer following the close of the 2022 campaign.
Each season, Nichols attempts to prepare his program for a rigorous conference schedule by playing the toughest possible non-league slate, and the 2023 campaign is no exception. The Falcons will once again test themselves against some of the best teams in the region and the nation. BGSU will play four matches, including two at home, against programs that qualified for the NCAA Championships in 2022.
The Falcons' non-league schedule features three contests against Big Ten Conference foes, with the Orange and Brown also meeting teams from the Atlantic 10 Conference, Big East Conference and Horizon League.
The regular season begins with a home game against Cleveland State on Thursday, Aug. 24. The Vikings made a trip to the national tournament last fall. The August portion of the schedule concludes with trips to Michigan State (Aug. 28) and Duquesne (Aug. 31).
BGSU opens the September slate with three-straight home games, including a matchup with Michigan on Labor Day afternoon (Sept. 4). That stretch also sees the Falcons face DePaul (Sept. 8) and Northern Kentucky (Sept. 12) inside Cochrane's confines.
The Falcons' first-ever MVC matchup will come against a former MAC foe, as BGSU plays at Western Michigan on Saturday, Sept. 16. The Broncos won 16 matches and advanced to the NCAA's Round of 16 in 2022.
BGSU steps outside of conference play on Sept. 19, traveling to Wright State in the 2023 season's battle for the I-75 Cup. Then, the Falcons return home and return to conference play, with MVC matchups against Bradley (Sept. 23) and Evansville (Sept. 30) on back-to-back Saturdays.
October begins with a pair of road games to conclude the non-league schedule. BGSU will head to the Motor City to face Detroit Mercy – coached by former BGSU assistant coach Nate Kopunek – on Oct. 3. Then, the Falcons will meet reigning Big Ten champion Maryland in College Park four days later (Oct. 7).
BG wraps up the regular season with five-straight MVC matchups. The Falcons hit the road to meet Belmont (Oct. 14) before returning home to face UIC (Oct. 18). After a trip to Drake (Oct. 22), BGSU will conclude the home portion of the regular-season schedule against defending MVC champion Missouri State on Friday, Oct. 27. Then, the Orange and Brown will return to the road to battle Northern Illinois on Nov. 1.
The MVC Tournament runs from Nov. 5-11.

BGSU went 6-5-5 overall in the fall of 2022, and the Falcons ended the final season of MAC play with a 4-2-2 league ledger. The 2022 Falcons set a school record for fewest goals allowed in a season, surrendering just 10 in 16 matches. BG's goals-against average of 0.63 was the second-lowest in school history..
The Falcons have a record of 42-25-12 over the last 79 games, dating to midway through the 2018 season. Sixteen of the 25 setbacks in that time have come by a single goal.
