BGSU is well-represented on OCSA All-Ohio, Academic All-Ohio Teams
The Bowling Green State University men's soccer team was well represented when the Ohio Collegiate Soccer Association unveiled its 2023 award winners. Alberto Anaya and Trace Terry were named to the OCSA's All-Ohio Team, and Anaya was also selected to the Academic All-Ohio Team. Kyle Blasingame, Brendan Graves and Eli Shope joined Anaya on the Academic All-Ohio squad.
BGSU's total of four Academic All-Ohio selections was the highest of any school. Akron and Ohio State each had three selections to the team.
Anaya, a native of Queretaro, Mexico (ITESM Leon), was named to the All-Missouri Valley Conference First Team in 2023, and was also named to the United Soccer Coaches All-West Region Third Team. He tied for the BGSU lead in goals, assists and points, despite missing three matches due to injury. The midfielder's total of 14 points included four goals and six assists. A team captain, he scored 12 of his points in conference contests, with all four of his goals and four assists coming against MVC foes. Anaya scored a goal in four consecutive games, the longest streak by a Falcon since 2005. He saw action in seven MVC matches, and had at least one point in six of them. Anaya ends his junior season with career totals of 38 points on 12 goals and 14 assists in the Orange and Brown. Anaya's other 2023 honors so far include the MVC Scholar-Athlete Second Team and the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District® Team.
Terry, who hails from Bellbrook, Ohio (Bellbrook), was named to the All-MVC Second Team in his sophomore season. He started all 18 matches and tied for the team lead in goals, assists and points in his sophomore campaign. Like Anaya, Terry totaled 14 points on four goals and six assists. He exploded for nine of those points in back-to-back wins at Cochrane Stadium, with two goals against Bradley, followed by two more goals and an assist against Evansville. Terry led the Falcons on both total shot attempts (40) and shots on goal (18) in 2023. In MVC matches, he was second on the club with 11 points, including four goals to tie Anaya for the team lead in that category. Overall, Terry more than tripled his 2022 point total in '23.Â
Blasingame, a native of Oswego, Ill. (Oswego East), was a mainstay in the Falcons' lineup in 2023. After playing in a total of eight matches in his first three years with the Falcons, he was one of just four players to start all 18 contests in the '23 season. He was second on the team and first among all non-goalkeepers in minutes played, as he was on the pitch for 1,483 of the Falcons' 1,620 total minutes on the season. Blasingame picked up an assist in the Falcons' first-ever MVC victory, a 3-1 win over Bradley. He played the entire 90 minutes in seven of BGSU's matches, and played over 75 minutes in 16 of the 18 contests.
Graves, a native of Perrysburg, Ohio (Perrysburg), was named to the OCSA Academic All-Ohio Team for the second-straight season. He played every second of every match, also for the second-straight season, in 2023. In fact, Graves has played every second of the Falcons' last 40 matches -- a total of 3,620 minutes. No other BG player has been between the posts since Oct. 22, 2021. Graves had a 1.67 goals-against average and a pair of shutouts in 2023. He also had 84 saves, the highest single-season total by a Falcon since 2012. Graves had five or more saves in nine of the season's 18 matches, including in eight of BG's last 12 contests. He tied for ninth in the nation in saves and ranked 16th in saves per game (4.67) in 2023. His career total of 11 shutouts ties him for 11th in BGSU history on that list, while his career GAA of 1.27 ranks him 13th all-time. Graves was named to the MVC Scholar-Athlete First Team in 2023, and was named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District® Team for the second consecutive season.
Shope, a native of Bowling Green, Ohio (Toledo St. John's Jesuit), tied for the BGSU lead in goals and finished third in points, despite missing the Falcons' final four-plus matches due to injury. The fifth-year Falcon started each of BGSU's first 14 matches and had nine points on four goals and an assist. Three of those goals were the game-opening goal, and the fourth was a game-winning marker. He scored BG's first goal of the year, in a season-opening win over Cleveland State, then had the GWG vs. Michigan. Shope had a goal and an assist in a Senior Night win over Evansville, and opened the scoring in another BGSU victory, against UIC. Shope played in 44 career matches for the Orange and Brown, and had 12 points on five goals and two assists. He earned MVC Scholar-Athlete Second-Team accolades in BGSU's first season in the conference, and was also named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District® Team.
