BGSU Athletics Launches Full Life Design Mentorship Program
April 01, 2024 | General
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -Â In conjunction with BGSU OneDay, BGSU Athletics is excited to publicly launch the Athletics Life Design Mentorship Program at Bowling Green State University.Â
Â
The Athletics Life Design Mentorship Program at Bowling Green State University is specifically for our student-athletes and provides resources to prepare them for life after sport.  Through one-on-one mentoring, dedicated academic support, professional development workshops, and the Falcon Professional Network, Bowling Green student-athletes will be challenged to think differently over the course of their college career and be well equipped to transition out of college.Â
Â
This year during BGSU OneDay, we encourage donors to consider supporting the Athletics Life Design Mentorship Program. Gifts help ensure student-athletes have the necessary tools they need to thrive.

"The mission of Life Design is to prepare students for success in college both in and outside the classroom," said BGSU Director of Athletics Derek van der Merwe. "We believe this program will separate and distinguish us from our peers in college sports.  It looks holistically at the skills, relationships, aptitudes, and aspirations of each individual and begins to support growth and preparedness for life. In this program, BGSU student-athletes are being given a jump start in the preparation for transition from sports to careers. They are being equipped with transformative skills and knowledge that will set them apart in the workforce and in life."
Â
Through a year-by-year vision, the program aims to maximize academic experiences, prioritize well-being, foster connections, jump-start careers, and instill a lasting sense of purpose. With a commitment to holistic development and inclusivity, the Athletics Life Design Mentorship Program is a cornerstone for student-athletes.Â
Â
Â
"We started the Life Design Program with football last year and love the benefits," said football head coach Scot Loeffler. "BGSU Football strives to develop great leaders in the community, and to prepare our players for life after football. Our Life Design program here at BGSU has helped us take our mission to the next level with the resources and opportunities it is providing our student-athletes.Â
Â
BGSU Athletics provides our student-athletes with an opportunity different from any other athletic department in the nation by integrating Life Design principles from freshman year through graduation. Â
Â
Thanks to the generosity of Bowling Green alumnus Ed Petras, BGSU Athletics was able to implement the Athletics Life Design Mentorship Program to differentiate BGSU Athletics from their peers academically, creating recruiting advantages. "A promised made, is a promise delivered, is a promised kept," said Petras. Petras continues to support BGSU and this mission because he wants to help student-athletes thrive in their transition from college to careers, and life. Â
